Hi Sam, I don't time the whole run as my £1 car boot sale stop watch cannot cope with multiple timings. The middle 4 miles is my lactate threshhold session - currently at 9:30 a mile. - The 2 mile warm-up and cool-down either side of this is at a dead slow jog. If I don't combine the endurance and lactate runs like this then there aren't enough days in the week! Obviously the distance for the race is not going to be a problem but my pace is still pathetic. I will probably push this endurance/lactate training run up to ten miles overall distance and then hold it there to allow the speed to develope again. Ten miles is about the minimum distance for a useful fat-burn. This will reduce my weight so increasing speed as well as making for a better picture!! Chaz

With all this exercise Chaz how do you have time to make progress on the V6 into the SS? Are you hoping to get a lucrative modelling contract after the calendar hits the shops??

I think Jeff may be invited back for a contract

Hi Chris - I'm viewing the running as a gauge on how well I'm recovering from M.E. - 9 miles on Saturday so not too bad so far........... I have a few days holiday over Christmas and hope to get the brake pipes finished then. After a break I will start stripping down the V6 maybe in Feb. Unfortunately I may have to continue working away from home few a few more months so that restricts my free time! I don't think I can depend on a modelling contract unless I want to be very poor indeed!!
Yes Sam, it was a good photo of Jeff, although I don't think I'd make a very good showing in all that cold snow.........

And the second milestone reached.........
10 mile endurance reached yesterday. I'll hold at that distance and work on the speed and strength. Total weight loss is now 12 lbs.

Third milestone reached!
The ten milers are having the desired effect and I have now lost a straight stone.
Speed also increasing.
I may splash out and buy an extra carrot for Christmas.
Everyone else is being very discreet on their training progress!
Chaz.

It was Christmas, so that is allowed. I put on about 6lb

You'll lose that in no time flat - or you can keep it if you want as I'm not yet anywhere near 6:32 pace!
I won't get to Stoneleigh until Sunday afternoon as I've just realized I've got a 10k road race in the morning. I'll get the car loaded before the race and drive straight down afterwards.

Roy, You have a head start with that one! It reminds me of someone out of "Bonanza" I think. I hope it will prompt others to fill in the vacant months! I've still got to lose a bit more fat yet and double up on the gymwork to be worthy of the standard set by Jeff. I've got the snow outside already, but I don't think it will keep long enough. However when the time is right I will submit my contribution. Be afraid, be very afraid.........

It is like Bonanza actually (not that I remember it obviously!). You are so lucky to have snow

I did not feel lucky at 5:30 in the morning freezing cold hoping that that lemon of a diesel Mondeo I have just bought would start! Bl**dy thing! I lost a days training, eventually had to bike into work in a freezing gale and caught a cold. Mondeo sorted now so back on the kit as soon as the weather relents.
Obviously I don't remember Bonanza either.
My ol' Gran'pappy done tol' me.........

Push or motor (bike)? ;D

Push bike! Hadn't ridden it for years. Pumped up tyres and oiled it up. Riding it wasn't too bad but the wind was freezing and despite layers of clothing couldn't get warmed up. I will never be able to count up to twenty again. But I s'pose it did count as a bit of training. Still, Mondeo seems OK now, touch wood.

Could you count up to 20 before? ( Chaz - that was just too tempting!) It was quite warm today, even I went outside for a walk! Where are you with the SS?

Ah - excellent Simon! Are you training for the race or the club calendar? You have a way to go to match Jeff's standard

Hi Sam, I guess Simon's in training for the race as he is already too d*mn suave and debonair for the calendar for his own good. Just done my best 4 mile pace yet! 8:47, my P.B. is 8:32 at that distance. When I beat that I'll count it as another milestone.
Hi Simon, Yes I could count up to twenty before. I know that because one of the toes I still have left is the one with "20" actually written on it. Most of the webbing has gone as well. I will update the thread in the next few days if the weather permits some photos. Had a bit of an interruption while I got rid of the Sierras and beat that blasted Mondeo into submission. Chaz.

That's who you described He was the saint wasn't he - my grandparents told me - was way before my time . That angelic ring around his head always put me off a bit. Nice looking (very so), but a bit kinda good (well behaved I mean) for your normal red blooded woman I would say

Head ring? Well behaved?
Oooops! Silly me. Meant Simon Cowell of course.

And another (this is getting repetitive!) milestone reached......... 4 miles at 8:31 - lifetime best for me. Ran only 11 mins a mile when I first started training again last October. Another 2 mins a mile to go though which is going to be v. hard.........

I really think that I only did that 6 1/2 a mile run once. I was pleased with the time, but I don't usually run that fast - honest! I think the thing is that my normal run is in a very hilly area so doing a 4 mile fun run on the flat was comparitavely easy. I am not sure how I achieved that time though

Hi Sam, I'm sure you're being modest! (Or maybe that was a clever psychological ploy to lull me into a false sense of adequacy? - No, no, of course not........) A race usually brings out the best. Anyway my time is on a flat course as well, so I've a bit to go yet. 8:31 is moderate, not fast. I'll find out in May when I run the GEAR 10k in Lynn (6.2 miles). That will show my (lack of) speed up! No training this week as I've a stinking cold - first training break since I started so it won't do any harm. Annoying though as I was on a good streak. This thread is turning into a running log. We need more volunteers for the calendar guys!

Well I actually timed my run today, which is not something I have ever really done before. Is about 7 1/2 minutes a mile. I still am not convinced about my time on that fun run. I did run a good time because I beat a lot of proper runners. It was on one of the hottest days of the year so maybe I just run better than others on no fluids ;D ;D It did cause my friends great amusement tho cos I spent was in the local pub til 2am that morning dancing to a band & drinking snakebite. Maybe you need to increase your alcohol consumption

7:30 a mile sounds good to me. Still means I'll have to acheive better than 7 mins on a flat course to be competitive. Cold still v. bad. V. annoyed about not running. Still that gives me a chance to try your advanced training tip of increasing fluids at 2 am! I have set the alarm clock and un-corked a bottle of red. I will report on any effects once the hangover has dissipated.

Hangover gone. And cold gone too. Back in training. Distances all acheived OK but speed had dropped by a minute a mile! I have clawed back 20 seconds of that this week but am very disappointed to lost so much. Must train harder. On the other hand the gym is going well and I've lost another pound.
So maybe late night drinking is not the best training regime for me after all? .........

The Great East Anglia Run (GEAR) was last Sunday (Yes, the first day of Stoneleigh). Studiously (dumbly?) following Sam's advice I spent Saturday night wining and dining until 1:00 am, to be up at 07:00 (King's Lynn being closed to traffic from 09:30). I don't know whether this training regime helped or not but I ran the 10k in 53:08. The week before the race my last 4 mile training run was another PB of 8:17 a mile.
Not too bad for a short, fat bloke with webbed feet.
But the next 10k race will be faster.
Pity it was on during Stoneleigh. I missed most of the first day. Newark will be better.
Chaz.
