A bottle of Mr. Daniels finest would have that effect on my memory too...... So are you entering the race? 1 mile jog, 3 min recovery then 1 mile walk/jog today. My first hill training last Wednesday. I remember jogging the first 30 yards up Cleve Hill - everything a blur after that, but I staggered to the top eventually. Bit embarassing being overtaken by grazing sheep though....... Chaz.

Mm...
A bit terse, but probably true in my case!
3 x 1/2 mile again today - legs a bit weak but was surprised that that pace had increased to 10'22" - a minute a mile faster than the same route last week! Recovery time slightly quicker as well.
Come on you lot! Linda's not going to have much competition.
Chaz.

Yes, there do need to be more than two people in this race!
There must be some other runners among us.
Jason - how are you getting along with your training??

Me no b rude. It’s just all this talk of, running, racing, dieting and general physical exertion sounds a bit frightening to me. I’m knackered just reading about it. But don’t let me deter you from your self inflicted. BFN.

Yep, I've just had a pint too - of cranberry juice and spring water. Just the thing after a mile and a half of walk/jog hillwork with ankle weights. Jason must be acheiving a similar effect with a pork pie in each hand - oh, of course that'll be his balanced diet. Linda's in superb shape. I'm pulling myself up by my bootstraps, Alex can yomp over 25 miles of Dartmoor............. Can we add anyone else to the list? ??

And so to this weeks update:
Mon - 3 x 1/2 a mile - 22 secs a mile faster than last week Wed - 2 miles walk/jog with ankle weights (Hills round Newent - SamSS will NOT have home advantage!) Fri - 3 miles non-stop jog - pace 20 secs a mile faster than last week.
Lost 4 pounds so far, although I need to lose another stone and a quarter to have any hope of getting near Sam's pace.
Should be able to jog 4 miles next week but will continue to extend this up to 6 miles as this is of necessity on a flat course, whereas the race will be 4 miles and hilly.
First gym session booked for next Tues - need to increase core strength and tone the arms for efficient running.
And from the rest of the merry band?
Chaz.

I rekon Jason is secretly in serious training. Eating only grilled chicken & lightly steamed veg & drinking only mineral water. He is gonna take us all by surprise & enter at the last minute & romp to victory! I have also increased my training, as I am cycling to the other side of Gloucester most days. Hence I now cycle almost 30 miles a day & run between 3 & 6. Oh - but I haven't lost any weight as I have increased my alcohol consumption & am eating everything in sight to balance out the increase in exercise ;D Which hills are you running up in Newent Chaz? May Hill is a good one to try & test your stamina on

I think you're right about Jason training secretly. Very, very secretly!
And you've increased your training too?
Oh d*mn, d*mn and double d*mn!
I've been loggin my training in this thread in an attempt to be considered a worthy entry, by at least finishing the course on the same day as I start it. I've obviously over-cooked this and triggered you into training harder! I have no hope at all in getting remotely close to your potential time. I've really stuffed myself now!
Mmmmmmm.........
Oh yes.....
Well, as a "New man" I obviously have the best interests of the fairer sex always uppermost in my mind. With that being the case here's a few training tips that I've selected from boning up on the latest scientific discoveries in the field:
Beyond a certain level of fitness hard training becomes counter-productive. For example, anyone capable of running 4 miles at a pace of 6:32 no longer needs to train daily. Further improvements are best attained by;
1. Energy conservation - plenty of rest. Fitness is maintained by "visualization". Sit in your favourite comfy chair and imagine running the course, fast, freely, and without stress.
2. Increase energy reserves - The secret here is calories. A highly trained body burns calories very efficiently - therefore the more calories the body has available the faster you will be able to run on the day of the race! But be very careful not to waste any energy by doing any training before the race. The most weight efficient form calories come in is pure fat. Spoon down a bowl of dripping whilst in the chair "visualizing".
3. Magnets - It is well documented from many sources that magnets help energy flows through the body. For runners they are particularly useful in the soles of the feet, or around the ankles. However, powerful ones are are required for the requisite effect and are therefore very expensive. (By a lucky coincidence I have two very strong magnets from a pair of duff PA speakers that I would be delighted to send you. Please don't worry about the postage, I'll pay, even though it will cost a bomb, as they weigh about 6 kilos each. Just tie one to each leg.)
I am sure that if you follow all the above you will notice huge changes in your performance on race day. As always, with your best interests at heart, Chaz.
That should do nicely. Now, what else was there?
Oh yeah, I know a May Firmage. Haven't met May Hill yet.
Actually I'm running on the main road between Newent up to 3 choirs (depending whether it's VO2 max or hillwork) but would like to try May hill. Just point me in the right direction!
Chaz.

It's the one you can see from almost the whole world & it has a bunch of trees on top! I could see it from my garden in Bristol when I was a kid & was fascinated by it. I cycle up there sometimes.........& it is a sharp slope

Steep, with a bunch of trees on the top, and you can see it from Bristol.
Gee, I hardly needed to ask, did I?

Yeeeeaaaahhhh!!!!
Speedwork (i.e. a less slow jog!) Monday. Tuesday first gymwork in two years. Wednesday - Hillwork (v. hard as sore and tired from gym). And today? 4 miles non-stop jog!! - The first milestone in training has been reached - Race distance acheived!
Speed and strength for the hills needs working on next. Speed is highly dependant on body weight. Fat burn becomes easier as endurance increases. (fat burning metabolism triples after 40 mins aerobic running). As the Friday run distance is increased the fat loss will become significant.
Weight loss to date is half a stone.
Not bad after 5 weeks training.
One smug cat here.

Steady Sam, steady!
I think the camera might shake a bit too much.........
Endurance up to 6 miles now - feels good so I'll extend it a bit further yet. Lactate threshold pace now down to 9:52. Half mile intervals down to 8:46 - speeding up nicely. Weight loss to date 9lbs but will have to lose another 12lbs at least before I stop cracking camera lenses! Have added roasted beetroot to the diet.
Chaz.

As you might be able to tell I have finnaly found internet access and can get back to actually adding to the conversation. I am gald that the conversation has moved on from when I was last here! Jon

Hi Linda and all. Linda I've been So So busy that I had completely forgotten. I haven’t even looked at this site for weeks. I'll get onto it this week. Pity I've left it this late in the year, as the cold wont show me at my best in only my skids. I asked my "bird" what she thought of me going in the calender, she said no. So I let her have it, I told her straight, I'm the boss in the house and dont you forget it. Any more of that attitude and you can make these beds yourself. I'm of out for the night tonight so i'm going to get a shower now. BFN, me X.
