The government’s proposal to introduce road pricing will mean you having to purchase a tracking device for your car and paying a monthly bill to use it. The tracking device will cost about £200 and in a recent study by the BBC, the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist and £194 for a delivery driver. A non working Mum who used the car to take the kids to school paid £86 in one month. On top of this massive increase in tax, you will be tracked. Somebody will know where you are at all times. They will also know how fast you have been going, so even if you accidentally creep over a speed limit you can expect an NIP with your monthly bill. If you care about our freedoms and stopping the constant bashing of the car driver, please sign the petition on No 10's new website: petitions.pm.gov.uk/traveltax/

Done. It is a constant erosion of civil liberties and the tax aspect of the pricing is shocking There should be much more encouragement for manufacturers to use genuinely green technology with tax breaks and incentives to those companies getting ever cheaper 'renewable source' vehicles on the road. But lets not lose sight of the fact that even if all the cars in the UK were taken off the road tomorrow, the environmental benefit would be eaten up within months by 'dirty' industrialisation in China and India, not to mention the increase in air traffic that the government seems to be encouraging. .......steps off soap box......... , i'll get my coat

Never apologise for getting on that soap box, 14million people died in WW2 so you could do it! And I agree, I am fed up with money (mainly the dollar) overruleing common sense and the environment.

We've already got road pricing. We pay for every mile in fuel tax.

A non working Mum who used the car to take the kids to school paid £86 in one month. kids should walk or cycle to school,i think the kids of today should be made to burn off some of the energy they have for earning ASBO's, rush hour is a big line of people carriers and 4x4 doing the school run

Don't start on the 4x4 thing. You have one yourself now and if you have kids I bet you will end up taking them to school in it at some point. Also I know mine is probably not the most economical 4x4 on the road and may dwarf Landcruisers but it is more environmentally friendly than most of the cars doing the school run as it is LPG powered for 99% of it's time. We should be able to choose what we drive and not be forced to drive what others think we should. As someone else said make the manufacturers do the saving of the environment with tax breaks and then we can choose again what we buy to drive out of the more environmentally friendly vehicles that are on offer. The governments of today keep bleating on about saving the world etc. by increasing fuel costs but in truth it is just another stealth tax. The congestion charge is to stop congestion? no otherwise why are cars with LPG or electric motors exempt? (so long as they are on a particular register, mine isn't) You can even get a small road tax reduction for LPG cars, again so long as it is on a particular register. Older cars converted don't get on it so you pay £2000 for a conversion to ease your fuel bills and help the environment but get no help in return. The older cars are the ones that give off more toxic waste so give people an insentive to convert the old cars and help save that way. The other way is to scrap all cars over 10 years old and stuff everyone, which would include kit cars.
Steps down off soap box and looks for somewhere to emigrate to as this country is getting on my tits.

Yeah, people should be able to drive what they like, but I totally agree with Jason. Children should be encouraged to walk or cycle to school.
4x4 s on the shool run are a nuisance, particularly when they park, badly & dangerously, as close to the school gates as they can get. (Presumably in case their child is snatched, between car & playgrond, by the paedophile that apparently lurks outside every school gate).
Also there wouldn't be such a problem with obesity & lack of fitness in young people. Their mothers may notice the benefits of walking their children to school also - could save on a whole years gym membeship ;D

I did that, emigrate, and guess what? There's just as much to get on your tits where ever you go, here (Spain) bureaucracy and corruption is rife and things take forever to get done, if at all, there is no welfare state so no dole fraud, (no dole unless you earned it and were not self employed and then only untill your credits run out.) No housing benefit scams, (no housing benefit), No young unmarried mothers living on child benefit in a council house, (no child benefit and no council houses). BUT when YOU need it. it's not there. But the sun shines and car tax is only £30 a year and wiskey etc is only £3 a litre. ;D

Come on chaps its so obvious, the government are trying to take the cars off the roads and force us to use the wonderfully public transport system we have. Its a great idea, I wonder if they have ever tried to use public transport, outside of London? Last time I tried to get on a bus, it was as expensive as a taxi and the taxi is door to door. Come on TonyB, stop punishing us, give us some alternatives before you cripple our pockets.

Well I have told the kids they are walking to school tomorrow and it hasn't gone down very well (it's 10.5miles door to door) my fault as I didn't like the school that was only two miles away. The only worry for me making them walk that distance is that none of them are much fatter than a stick insect so god only knows what they will look like when they have done a few weeks walking. I think that most (not all) fat kids come from fat parents, just look at what they throw in their trolleys at the local supermarket and you will see why. One last note (and another reason for choosing a school miles away) have any of you as parents been to a non competitive sports day. I kid you not and I was well p***** off taking time off to go and see kids as bored as me. I was told by the head teacher it was government guidelines so that none of the less able kids would get upset. My argument that life is a challenge and there is competition in everything from kids sports to job interviews fell on deaf ears so off the kids went to another school. (mind you the lad is a total a**** but then you can't have everything can you). Will keep you posted on the walk to school.

Disagree with nothing there either Mr thekidscar, cept maybe if it is 10.5 miles door to door, then maybe cycling would have been a better option to suggest to them than walking Aren't we arguing for the same thing here? Yes I have seen the crap they put in their trolleys & I, sadly, know that the non competitive sports days exist. Something I feel quite strongly about. Everyone, from a young age should be encouraged to strive to be the best they can be - or are you now gonna accuse me of being too harsh now? I think good for you for removing them from that school! If I had children I would have done the same. Anyone who is unaware of how bad the education system is in this country, with or without the physical education side, is presumably living in a happy clappy world of their own.

Walk to school fell at the first hurdle, couldn't get the little buggers out of bed at that time of the morning. Cycling could be the answer, will have to see how long it takes me at the weekend and see if it is feasable for them, a few hills and a couple of big road junctions/roundabouts to negotiate so will have to be abit careful as none of them are that road wise really. Journey will no doubt be longer too as they can't ride down the A1/M from our house. Still looking at somewhere else but doubt the wife will want to move. Anyone know much about Newzealand? Older technology, no natural preadators weather a bit like ours (parents lived in Spain for 25 years and I don't like it too hot, aren't I the miserable one).

Got to admit some interesting replies My own thoughts are.......................... OK. So the Government decide that a charge of £1.50 (This figure is the suggested fee?) per mile to combat congestion. Everyone has to pay £200+ for the privilege of having a little black box in/on there vehicle. The haulage company's that deliver ALL of the goods to the shops are going to pass on this cost to the company's they are hauling for, this is going to mean a large rise in haulage costs The retailers are going to pass these costs onto the customer (You & Me ) So a little trip to the shops is now going to cost you not only to get there, but the goods you wants to purchase are going to cost a whole lot more than they used to. How are you going to afford all of this................... How do you think the economy is going to fair with the cost of living going through the roof, shops not being able to survive and laying off staff, company's going bust laying off staff as they can't sell there goods as they are now too expensive. Yes the roads will be quieter. Only the rich or those that have been given a permit to use the roads will be able to use them. There will be even less pollution due to the factory's closing down, so less emissions being pumped into the atmosphere. Hardly anyone will have a job so the airlines will have less flights so even LESS pollution being pumped into the atmosphere. Yes........... Road Congestion Charging is a great idea, the country will grind to a halt, thousands will loose there homes as they can't afford there mortgages as they have lost there jobs, the economy will collapse BUT the quality of the atmosphere will be greatly improved over the UK............................................. Hang on a min.......................................... China & The Former USSR are pumping out MORE toxins into the atmosphere in ONE WEEK than the whole of the UK in 2 Months ?? (Fact from Wilkopedia SP?) Worst case scenario ? Maybe - Maybe Not In my job I travel about 1000 miles a week (sometimes more) my boss has already said that if Road pricing does come in then he will have NO choice but to close the company down 28 people out of work. How many others will loose there jobs ? Depressing isn't it

Don't worry, the cost won't be £1.50 a mile to start with, this is the usual ploy of governments, put in a huge price to scare people and when they give a lower actual price everyone sighs with releif and say "OH IT COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE" or "THAT'S NOT AS BAD AS WE THOUGHT". They are playing with your minds AGAIN.

They are playing with your minds AGAIN. Your right. I doubt very much if it will be £1.50 BUT, any charge for using the roads is wrong (IMHO) The amount of Tax that I pay each and every day/week/month/year on everything from the food I eat, the clothes I wear, the petrol that goes in the car & back to my wages. How much more does this (or any) government want Anyway, the road pricing should come just in time to finance the MP's 60% Payrise Now thats a whole other thread I shall leave politics alone now, I get to angry about it and I know I shouldn't

I think you're right to get angry. I think everyone should get angry. Normal working people seem to have to pay for dancing lessons for fat people, driving lessons for immigrants, other countries pollution and carbon emissions - I could go on but we all get the picture. We have a right to be angry.

Ok, here is some more 'ammo' to get angry about. Differences in countries cost to the motorist.
In Spain. My older car is a 2.3, 187 hp Mercedes.
Annual tax £30 (I'll do it in £) which gets paid when you feel like it and there is no external indication of it being paid, or not.
MoT (ITV) £22 (windscreen sticker) cars under 5 and motorcycles only every 2 years, cars over 5 every year.
Fuel 0.70p per liter VAT (IVA) 16% MY A170 cost even less.
Number of CCTV cameras in San Pedro, none. Fxed speed cameras from Malaga to Gibraltar, None.

Normal working people seem to have to pay for dancing lessons for fat people I never saw the dancing lessons for fat people - can they really get that on the NHS? Wicked! I could plead poverty right now & learn to dance ........or do I have to be anything other than white to claim that benefit? Can't wait for the Romanian gypsies to come over. They will improve the economy no end.

! Anyone who knows me would realise I am anything but not politically correct. I do my utmost best - just the rules change every time Tony Blair passes wind - ooops, speaks I mean obviously. Alex, we can so stop the government. just we have to have the loudest mouth & the smallest point to make & they will rush policies through. I think it is called the parliment act. Its the one they used to ensure the perverts in their party could enforce their sexuality on boys who have barely reached the age of consent. I can't even tell you how much that one makes me wanna puke. Anyway - I'll just wait for them to send the anthrax in the post
