Hi guys'n'gals
Just wondering if anybody on here has based their RV build on a Sierra XR4x4? Where I'm based, pinto or 2wd V6 Sierras are very thin on the ground. However, there are loads of 2.8i Sierras in 4x4 configuration and, for the moment, they are cheap as chips which set my little grey cells a tingling.
It struck me that this is a cheap 4x4 option without going the Land Rover, (Expensive) or Jap Jeep, (cr@psville), route. May require some chassis mods but considering the simplicity of the RV chassis then it shouldn't be too much of a challenge so:
(i) Has anybody done it?....and
(ii) If not why not?

It has been done but on a SS (Interstellar Overdrive), as the SS and RV chassis are the same it should be do-able. www.eagleownersclub.org.uk/members%20cars/mbrcars.htm Unfortunately this car had a roof fall on it 10 years ago and as far as I know it is still buried in a builders yard under a tarp'.

I've got my 2.8 fitted and mated to a Type 9 5 speed manual box, (Hard to source...and expensive), but I have decided that I'm going to go the whole hog and split the body from the chassis. Whilst trying to source some Sierra parts, all I have found up in the frozen North of Scotland are 4x4 variants.........rotten cars with good running gear are costing as much as I paid for my engine and box by themselves!!......there is, perhaps, an advantage of basing the rebuild on a different donor but might have to watch what I'm doing in relation to IVA regs etc. 4x4 is more in keeping with the look of the car but it will be an on-road car with road tyres. There's a 2.5l Daimler hemi with an autobox and a Jag irs in the garage which is tempting but I figure its a waste in the RV....save that for th E93 Pop I have wanted to build for the last 30 years ;-) Thanks Peter.........It's encouraging to hear that it has ben done before and, as you say, if its been done on a SS then it should be a cinch on a RV. I'm off to see a Sierra this afternoon and will take it from there...got to get my wife's boat down the sailing club shed first though...need some space ;-)

Chaz also fitted a Sierra rear axle on his SS and inboard disc brakes as well.
