hi guys
In my quest to find out why my rv does 12mpg I've recently been told it may be the gearing in the rear axle, something to do with the cortina axle being set up for a 2.0litre engine where as I'm running a 3.5litre engine,
so is there any truth in this and if so can i fix it by changing the gears or would i need to change the axle and what axle would do the job
ta nick

You need to figure out what you want in the diff, long legs for road or lower for off road/duel use. with a 3.5L best you could expect even on light car is 20 mpg, I was lucky to see 20mpg on my Rover SD1 auto on a 60mph cruise, blast it up to 140mph and you could see the fuel guage moving at -10mpg. At 60 mph in top you should see about 2,500 rpm, raise or lower axle ratio (Capri, Cortina. Seirra, etc or use Rover unit, (lot of work) according to use and test results.

This is a problem where 15 or 16 inch wheels and big tyres are fitted to a drivetrain designed for 13 inch wheels and tyres. add to this a body with O aerodynamics, flat front, flat screen big mirrors etc. To drive these size wheels you need a lower ratio diff realy like from a 4x4 or van.

Good idea, I was thinking (again) of the DAF 2.5 turbo diesel, using the rear axle from same should be just the job or the transit one. My old DAF pulled all my stuff, bike and car on trailer 1500 miles at a steady 70 and returned about 25mpg.

yea same here have thought a few times about using transit engine box and rear axle, just a lack of room to do it.
