Inspired by all the recent activity on the RV Owners room I thought I'd start a thread on my car.
Bought it in January this year, standard Cortina based 2.0Pinto RV, registered in 1992 (12 previous owners). Quite a good bodyshell and it has hard top and soft top, had MOT and tax so could use it from day one. Longest journey to date was the drive home 240 miles! Took it to Stoneleigh (hood fitted for the first time) since then some work on rear suspension, moved the speakers from the doors to the footwell trim panels and fitted a good secondhand 5 speed box. Went to Donington, only mishap speedo cable fell out again, circlip must be knackered. Lots of things I want to change we'll see how much gets done over the winter.
Will try to get some photos loaded using Peter's instructions but first attempt failed. Watch this space.

Good to hear from you about the Rv Chris. For those that haven't met Chris, he has come to several shows, & it is great that he has made the effort. Plus he brings his rather nice RV. Also I gather that this particular RV has been linked to the club for a while Pop some pics up Chris & we will see if it is recognised ;D

Keep in touch Chris as we are in relatively easy striking distance it would be good to meet up again and chat over the RV's n stuff.

Blimey it worked this time, probably left clicked by mistake yesterday. Now I know how will add more pictures later.
Samms mentioned it had been in the club some time, the guy who built it is R Hines (got an A4 notebook from the original build). Does this name sound familiar?
The club bonnet badge was added for Donington, looks good on the black. Replaced the Quicksilver decal that was starting to break up, there's plenty more on the car.

Shouldn't take you long if you crack on a bit with it Colin Chris, I think it was Simon who told me at one of the shows that your car use to belong to Bob. As in Bob who ran off with the club banners.

Just finished a useful fix on my RV. I have always been very disappointed with how floppy it felt. Looking under my car and at photos of ColinD's chassis it became obvious that there have been a number of mods from the standard configuration. First seems to be the chassis tube that goes across the chassis under the tail housing of the gear box had been cut (very neatly) and a new section (same size as original member) welded underneath to retain the strength, also done very well. I thought this was the original spec!. At some later point someone had cut through the new welded section, presumably to ease gearbox removal ( which it does) and disguised the bodge with filler, not easy to detect when it's all covered in crud. Would certainly not help the chassis torsional rigidity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wanted to retain the ability to remove the box easily so knocked up a substantial bolt on crossmember to fit behind the remains of the add on section. Fitted it today and it works really well. Feels like the chassis has some integrity at last.

Motivated by the success of the chassis fix I've now taken the LH door off. Aim is to stiffen the door and modify the profile so it fits the car. Have stripped off all the trim and looked at the structure. The main part of the door is quite stiff (shame it's the wrong shape) but where the hinges are mounted the flat area is weak and the whole door flexes about the hinge area. Now have a plan to try to address both issues.
Started doing the mods, progress is slowat present( it's bl***y cold in the garage in the evenings). Will update on progress.

Colin,
What you have achieved with your RV so far is amazing, especially considering it has all been at the mercy of the weather.
My tinkering will hopefully continue over the winter, it might be cold but it's dry and the lighting is not too bad. Will try the modded door, if OK I'll do the other side. Then try to sort the rear suspension (springs should be arriving soon), and the engine before end March.

Oh god, time seems to run away with me! I wish I could get more done on mine, since the paint things have been very slow indeed. Just come in from the garage at 11pm tonight and all I've done this evening is connect up the heater and extend the wiper motor electrics! Oh well gotta keep going and hope that it makes that Stoneleigh show next year. But on the bright side at least i'm in a garage. Good luck all builders and rebuilders out there over the winter, look forward to seeing the fruits of your labour next year. ;D

Hmmm...... I have heard that men keep porn in their garage, where their wives/partners don't expect it. Is there something you would like to explain to us David? Like why you went out to your garage for 4 hours & only managed to turn the heater on?

No ;D Anyway if there was porn in the garage, I'd hope there woould be more than the heater that was turned on after four hours ;D ;D Anyway I didn't just turn it on! I had to install it, plumb it, wire it and provide a freash air supply Uh, girls!

Hi Colin, one club tent, (now repaired), one club flag and out of shot one club banner, next year we will have added at least a banner for the triangle over the tent's door and some tables and folding chairs. Good in't, along with the web site etc, that's where the subs go.

Update since last post.
Finished the main door mods to the LHS and tried it on the RV, fits much better. I'll get some pics during the week. I need to tweak the top rear corner (this isn't quite right yet) before I start on the RHS. Then need to retrim both doors.
Also fitted a set of Cortina saloon rear springs to replace the old Eagle springs that had gone very "soft". Now have a reasonable std setup to work from.

Hi We purchased our RV with no forward gears (automatic) gearbox wouldn't tilt enought to remove couldn't be bothered to chop chassis - jigsawed out top of tunnel and made removable ali transmission cover, I thought a lot simpler than chopping chassis.
I have last weekend converted a 4 to 5 speed gearbox in a pinto'd RV with a removable 8 bolt crossmember - its refitting caused a lot of grief due to chassis twisting on ramps / stands.
Hope you get yours sorted without too much hassle.
