Hi. I'm in the process of removing the body from the chassis from my MK3 ford based SS. this is being done within the confines of your average lockup garage. the body will be held up by ropes from the very substantial beams above. everythings disconnected and I've raised the body a few inches above the chassis so far. however because of the design of the eagle body the rearmost chassis legs are within the curvature of the bodywork, and it seems that I would have to roll the chassis forward a few inches to clear the bodywork before I can lift it any higher. but my problem is that the seat sections of the floorpan hang below the chassis, and prevent me from doing this, the possible solution seems to be to raise the front of the body at quite a steep angle keeping the back low. but i can only raise the front so far before its fouling on something as well ... I'm sure given time I'll suss this out, but has anyone else had this problem ??
ta much
Brett

Bit of a tricky one by the looks of it Brett, is there a way you can move the chassis forward at all, it seems a bit of a palava lifting at a steep angle. But not having worked on a ss I,m only guessing. With a bit of luck some of the ss owners can help, theres plenty of them in bits out there ! Good luck, Terry

Hi, do you have an engine crane? I lifted my VW eagle body off with a engine crane, I managed to tilt the body up to atleast 45 degrees.

lots of people is my advice and a plan....i had one out of two and meant lots of "oh crap, didnt think this far ahead" moments and 7 of us sweating.
though probably easier my only gripe with using an engine crane would be the possibility of the f/g breaking wherever the straps/chains are.
Maybe a combination of lots of people AND an engine crane is best? ;D

unfortunately I dont have an engine crane. and I aggree with being carefull with damaging the body where the ropes hold the body up, especially at the front where theres not much strength,I've got padding in place to hopefully avoid that happening. I'l have another look on Friday whwn I'm there. plus I'm off all next week so got plenty of time to suss it out ... hopefully ;D

Have a look in the thread " My Chassis Mods" in the rv room about page 6 or so, you will see that eagles do fly.....well sort of . Could be a solution if you can get a frame like this.

Well I was lucky enough that I had a steel cross member bolted across one side of the dash to the other. It didnt damage the body work but if you have no supports to tie rope around its probly not worth lifting it that way. If you can get a winch or a number of jacks to lift the body I would, you will give yourself a serious injury if you try and lift it, espesially trying to manouvre it whilst lifting. Its great when you can pump a lever and the whole body goes up in seconds, also seriously helps with the engine ;D surely you could rent a engien crane from somewhere?

a wee update ... getting there with lifting the body. I'm afraid I'm one of those people that reads instructions that say " do not attempt this on your own " then go ahead and do it anyway I got myself a second trolley jack this morning ( thank you Aldi's ) and that made a lot of difference being able to lift both sides at the same time instead of the precarious lifting at one side and hoping it didnt tilt over. also had to remove the petrol tank as I discovered that it was fouling on the underside of the body when I was trying to roll the chassis forward. I still need to lift the front a bit more as the rear chassis legs are STILL within the curcature of the rear wings, think I'll end up with the body at an angle of around 30 - 40 degrees before I get it to the point where I can roll the chassis forward enough to allow me to lift the back up as high as I want to. I have been taking some photos so hopefully I'll remember how to post them on here once I'm done ;D Brett p.s. I also discovered that one of the reasons I could only lift the front so far up was because there was a substantial earth strap I hadnt noticed bolted to the chassis around where the chassis number plate is. definataly need glasses lol

Is your fuel tank mounted to your body or is it mounted to a frame off your chassis? is it VW or ford? Mine went up with the body, its on a aluminium farmework, I would like to have a propper look at this next time I lift the body (summer time).

Mines is a Ford based Mk3 SS, the tank is ( was ) mounted right above the rear axle on the part of the chassis the top shock absorber mounts are welded to. it wasnt attached to the body at all....

Another couple of questions .... my cars got the normal 4 speed gearbox. I've been eyeing up the five speed type nine. seems to me that it would be a good thing to fit as I would have an extra gear to play with, anyone got any views on this gearbox ? plus. to polybush or not to polybush, that is the question replacing the bushes on Cortina based suspension has to be a good thing, but are polybush ones too hard ? thanks Brett

Hi Brett, 5 speed box is a good thing to have but it means your engine has to move forward by about 40mm, or shorten the propshaft by the same amount, your gear stick would also move back the same. But a worthwhile mod. I got my polybush set off ebay from FLO-FLEX, they are not the super hard type but are an orange colour medium grade and should last ages. try googling flo-flex you may get there direct.

thanks Stu, good to know it works. I'm on a bit of a roll this year, hardly seemed to touch it the last couple of years. I've done more the last few months to it than in the previous 2 years. pretty much since I moved it to the lockup. .....

facebook is good but only lets you view in low resolution without being a friend. I think the photobucket account is much better, its simpler to view and you dont need any friend requests to view in high res, also does videos and slideshows, you can even embed a slideshow into a website or forum.

another update, got new bushes for the rear suspension and their fitted. had the suspension arms and the springs sandblasted too before I fitted them. then painted then all black prior to putting back on. i've also made up a new gasket for the differential cover since the old one was leaking anyway. once i've got the axle cleaned up, I'll put everything back on it, refit the axle. then do the same at the front ..
