Hi all, on a E bay auction six months ago there was a half completed rebuild of a RV. The seller had bought a new chassis based on a sierra. We have a very nice. what looks professionally built RV 3 litre all T & T'ed, a sad 2 litre pinto'd RV undergoing total rebuild for this summer !!! and an unregistered very badly built 3 litre RV that has just been stripped bare, body off etc for a start afresh option. to rabbit so to the point - also on the drive is a mechanically sound scorpio 2.9 4wd - see where I am going? If I found a sierra chassis I could end up with a nice new toy !!! I am mad always building wolves in sheeps clothing. Any ideas for chassis?

Bloody hell Scorpio, in for a penny.....!!!!
I also had a 4x4 scorpio but really could not face the mechanical jiggery pokery necessary to get the whole thing working under an RV and therefore just used the engine and fuel injection system to drive a Granada Type 9 gearbox to the rear wheels only. Cop-out, I know.
The problem (as I saw it) was that the front axle line was further forward in relation to the engine than in the base Scorpio (or mechanically similar Sierra 4x4) and therefore the front diff would have to be moved from the sump to somewhere in front of the engine.
Now, i'm not saying it can't be done as I saw a very well engineered V6 4x4 Dutton Melos at the Exeter show last year. A similar problem in this case resulted in removing the sump and mounting a modified version further forward with a longer front driveshaft. This has also been done on the 4x4 Ford based Cobras that exist, I am told.
I would have just thought that dropping the body onto a Range Rover or Daihatsu chassis would result in a more capable off-road vehicle with the associated low range boxes and potential for locking diffs etc
If it is the way you decide to go just for the hell of it and the Kudos of doing something never done before, then I would have said to start with the Sierra Eagle Chassis and use Sierra 4x4 front hubs etc
Get loads of photos though and get 'em to the shows ;D

Hi Dave -- read about you attempting half doors - there are various ones available in USA for CJ7's I must admit some really do look great - I have doors with wind up and sliders but would like half doors. I am always up for evolution

I really must get on with them actually. They are mocked up in wood and I just need to work some handles into the design and then take some molds.
Once the car is finished, and I'm nearly there, that is what I'll be turning to.
Looking forward to a big turn out of Eagles at Stoneleigh
