Hi guys after a lengthy period of my rv being off the road, finally got it back on ive found out the my lovely 3.5v8 does around 12 mpg, so i think my winter project this year is an engine change.
So id be interested to know what other people are running, i dont know whether to stick to petrol or change to diesel, my ideas so far have been
sierra engines diesel or petrol
land rover diesel engine
sherpa van/montego (perkins diesel)
so if anybody got some advice id be great full
many thanks nick

I take it its a Rover 3.5 V8 you have fitted? If it is then you should get a lot better gas mileage than 12 mpg especially as its hauling a significantly lighter body/chassis unit...I'm also assuming that you running with teo wheel drive? The rover 3.5 is a lovely engine to have in a RV so I would suggest you investigate the mpg issue. Diesel engines suck....oily smelly b@st@rd things...but there again I'm biased...I'm a true PETROLhead Land Rover diesel....if you want one then buy a Landy Montego turbo diesel engine with Sherpa gearbox is crap...there was one in my RV when I bought it....big lump but very asmatic. Sierra 2.8 on a type 9 gearbox is a good combo and should be an easy install in the RV. If you really want to go diesel then go for the 2.0 BMW motor...expensive I hear you cry....not really get one out of a Rover 75....same engine but cheaper on the second hand market...you will need the Beemer's gearbox as the Rover is front wheel drive....its not unheard of for these engines to run for 200 000mile and more....over engineered and lightly stressed motors.. Good luck with whatever you decide. Chris PS I binned my Montego/sherpa set up in favour of 2.0 pinto on a type 9........works for me ;D

thanks for that, good bit of info i love my rover v8 it sounds fantastic and turns heads and got some power in it as well, i think the main problem is the auto box, i got rid of the old su carbs and put on a 4 barreled holley and in doing so ive messed up the presure line so it doesnt change up into 3rd that might be a big part of the prob, so i might take your advice and do some investigating, may put a recon manual box on and give that a whirl.
many thanks nick

Although it's only 1.9ltrs the ambiguous Peugeot 1.9 diesel is one of the most tried and tested and reliable engines on the planet and has been used in a multitude of cars including Lada Riva, Citroen, I had two, a BX and a GS, etc etc. My friend has a Pug 206 1.9 TDi and we put it through hell and back over 3 years and including off road, (clogged filters, brokern engine mounts and ALL the plastic dissapearing from underneath) and it's bullet proof as well as pokey and economical there are thousands about and cheap to service. It would provide more than enough grunt in an RV unless you want to continue with over kill.

With all that grunt in a RV you dont need a manual gearbox Get on to one of the UK hot rod forums...there's a wealth of experience on the Rover V8...posibly also the V8 Rover Owners club

Good question ?
Sierra 1.8 is a bit small but a snip to fit in a sierra based rv. and comes with box.

Box of choice would be early Pug rear wheel drive (Cairo taxi) although only a 4 speed it is bullet proof and with the wide power band of the 1.9 diesel it should be OK
