Does anybody know what the going price for a complete on the road tidyish eagle ss is nowadays? I havent seen any sell, ever! all on ebay with bust screens and total wrecks. Just looking at how much i should spend on mine so i dont go overboard and loose money on the resale. is £2500 realistic?

This is a real grey area Chris, you only have to read the clasifieds in the kit car mags to find adds like "£5000 worth of receipts will accept £2500" ?. You could easily spend more than you will get back. But then an entheusiast who wants a good example of the marque will pay what its worth. Replica's seem to get decent money ? RV's are going cheep? mate this still doesn't answer your question though

No sure what "going overboard" is when you are talking about a kit car. I am rebuilding an SS because I love the shape and, if I'm honest, can't afford the new cost of something I would love.
Thus I will spend whatever I have at the time to achieve what I want. If I skimp on anything I know that I will always be looking at it thinking "I should have done it differently" and eventaull I will have to take ot all apart and fix it anyway. That is probably why most of us ever finish our cars!
The only reason I will ever sell is if I cannot complete it or I really, really have to. In both of these cases it is not what I sell it for but to whom that will metter to me.
Just my 2 p's worth.

This is the only road going SS I've seen for sale recently...check the thread on here: www.eaglecarclub.proboards25.com/index.cgi?board=sell&action=display&thread=896It was up for sale for 10 000 euros and according to the thread sold very quickly for 8000 euros which at the time was about £5-6k sterling. Personally, and this is only my opinion because I'm not a great lover of the SS, I would use the Nova or Avante as a guide for the price and then reduce by about 30%. The Nova and Avante were contemporaries of the SS but sold in greater numbers and more seem to have made it to the road. Might be a bit unfair on the SS by comparing with the Nova, as the latter formed a cult following that the SS will never attain. Personally I can't understand why you would splash the cash on a SS when there is a very nice Avante on Ebay at the moment for £2k but each to their own.

Maybe because we like pop up headlights and gull wing doors? Javier in Spain sold his MkII VW SS for 8000€ (or pounds, same these days), and my engine alone owes me 3000€ in parts alone so I would be looking for about that for my engine at least. If the car is a dog and "needs work" then, yes, you will be lucky to get the price of the return bus fare for it but remember, ANY SS is worth £400 just for the screen alone. Kit cars have rarely made money and are mostly an extension of the owners imagination and a hobby (AKA bottemless money pit) unlike some forms of transport, like a 1968 Lambretta SX200 in restored condition that today fetches 20 times (£6000+) what it cost new (£295)! Oh, if only I had kept mine. Peter

I baught mine for £1100 3 years ago, i havent spent much on it, it was a bit of a dod back then, roof leaked, carpets stank, stupid exhaust and rear lights and the usual minor things. I have benn trying every year to finish it, every time getting no further mainly due to funds, just hoping i can get it looking tidy and get my money back on it in 2009 so i can move on to another kit (brand new Dax Rush hopefully) I loved the car to begin with, but now ive lost the love for it. I think im either gonna sell it at college to some stupid boy racer or sell it abroad like above. Germany buy these cars for alot of money dont they, i have seen duttons which are worthless sell for thousands to germany, some german has put a maserati engine in an eagle

Kit cars have rarely made money Peter Well the Avante has pop up headlights so it meets your criteria half-way Come on then what engine have you got? Check out the Caterham 7 replicar scene. My mate is knocking out smart looking Westfields and Robin Hoods depending on customer budget and is making a decent living. I guess a simple build and a high demand herlps the cause.

Check out the car's page at ukhozi.page.tl and all will be revealed, basically it's a 1641 stage 3 screamer (that means it goes WELL over the standard 5,000 rpm max of the standard lump to over 7,000+rpm) and boast about 120 bhp against 48 standard and it is very pretty.

Just goes to show that there is an exception to every rule...that is one nice SS you have there....and it has the proper engine up the back...that helps to keep the front bonnet line nice and low. Also good to see a SS with the ride height sorted. That is a smart looking V-dub motor but considering the cost I'm surprised you didn't go 1776 or 1914. Both can be built for the same sort of money...the 1776 will give you similar bhp but more torque and therefore is generally more of a pleasure to drive. The 1914 gives you a lot more power and in a car as light, comparitively speaking, as the SS would prove a lively ride.....wheelspin in second and third if you dump the clutch!! One of my past lives was building V-dub aircooled motors and I still dabble in the VW scene but its now over-run with people ho want everything on the cheap. I could build a big bore engine and turn a profit selling for ther £1500-2000 range depending on carbs and other customer requiements. All the important bits were bought in new from the USA and cost a lot less than UK sources.......but guys still used to try and haggle on the price. If they went to John Maher or Laurie Pettit then they would pay double. I've built a 1914 which is going into my Pelland Coupe and I have two 1776's one each for my Pelland Sports and the Rembrandt. Flat4 aircooled rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

1641cc because of running costs, insurance etc, and you don’t need expensive machining to open up the crankcase either, not that I can get any done locally anyway and with a National top speed of 120KPH strictly enforced by ARMED police, I’m happy with it. Just about done with all the mechanical stuff now, just the oil cooler louvered cover to fix and the bonnet stay rams and then it’s getting the electrics sorted this week, New PAL monitor from Germany will be here in a week so I will be able to get the centre consul in at last. Fitted the Cobra CAT1 alarm with drivers door opening on disarm. (1 second pulse to solenoid via Skoda Favia tailgate contact pads), ér in doors is working late shift from today so I can get stuck in on recessing the repeaters and rubbing down the repair patches as well, (dust and smell should have cleared by 01:30 when she gets home), also I’m in the ever growing army of the unemployed, again, so plenty of time.
