Hi, my name is Greg i Registered about a month ago after a trip to Newark show a short distance from home in South Lincolnshire reignited my want for an Eagle RV Jeep. I almost bought Kit at Detling many years ago and after all these years i finally bagged one. It's maybe not the easiest project but a blank canvas and probably the only brand new almost un started kit left. It's a sierra based chassis currently rolling on a very rusty set of suspension and tiny wheels. My plan is to dispose of the suspension in favour of BMW running gear which is almost identical in dimensions to the sierra and hope to reuse the front suspension turrets? a plus side is the wheel pcd of 5x120 is identical to discovery 2 giving access to offroad style wheels. its going to be a slow burning project as autumn is coming and my work shop not built yet.

Hi Greg, I was looking at that one too, it's a shame the guy sold off the hard top and doors separately (especially the rear door) It's a nice new body etc, but I think your difficulty will be getting it through the dreaded IVA test to get it registered and a V5 issued. What engine are you thinking of using?

What engine are you thinkin⁴g of using? Hi, yes it's a shame he sold off the parts but at £350 it was a bargain and I intended to fit a cj7 tailgate, hardtop, doors and screen anyway. I've been fitting bmw m57 and m47 diesel engines to landrovers for a company and I have to make a decision with fuel prices. M57 3.0l diesel is the choice I want as easily 300hp but I also want it to become my daily and a 200bhp 2lt m47 might be a better choice. Both with 6 speed manual gearboxes. I've seen one rv has got through an iva with Blanking between to bumper and front arches.so might be possible or using another vin from a scrap rv which is a bit dodgy but needs must.

Yes £350 is a very reasonable price for a new shell, I was going to bid on it on eBay, but he removed it, luckily enough I found another one that has also been sitting in a garage for 30yrs. I'm not experienced enough to know what CJ parts actually fit, but I understand they are a little narrower, Barry on here has fitted a folding CJ metal screen to his RV, it's narrower but he made it fit and did a good job. I'll be surprised if the CJ roof and doors fit. I was thinking of fitting the BMW 1 D series engine to mine as I want auto diesel, but going to keep it basic with just a focus TDI mated to a Cortina auto box instead. The electrics scared me on the BMW lol, but I have another one too that needs an engine, so maybe I'll put one in that one when the time comes. Yes I heard of the one that passed the IVA, I don't know who owed it tho

On the Cortina based RV, the body tub is just over an inch wider than a CJ7. I am in the process of fitting CJ, two piece soft doors and windscreen to mine. Some modifications are needed to the screen hinges, to get it on, but it's all do-able.

It's strange they made the body slightly bigger but doesn't make it to much of an issue to cut and stretch the hard top to fit if needed. What do you plan for the rest of the build? I see your in Norwich! Just dropped my son off today at uca University and will be visiting regularly. Maybe we could meet up and swap some ideas. Regards Greg.

Hi Greg, Please remember that the Eagle RV is not a replica of a CJ Jeep. It's a facsimile
( Merriam-Webster lists the origin of the word “fax” as “shortening & alteration” with the first known use as 1937. The Oxford dictionaries list the origin of the word “fax” as an “abbreviation of facsimile” with the first known use in the 1940s.)
The Eagle R.V. was first used to fit on a VW beetle chassis which set the body width. The same body was used when they introduced the front engined model. The chassis is designed for ford cortina Mk 3, 4+5 and nothing else. Ford Sierra parts can be used with very few alterations to the chassis.
If you are going to use BMW parts, be aware that some gearboxes require ecu ( or similar ) reset to get it to work. + could be expensive if the automatic version.
I hope you are a good welder and auto electrician to complete this project.
Best of luck.
Graham.

Hi Graham, I was hoping the rv would be a bit closer to its inspiration the cj7. I remember well the original rhino jeep adverts in the back of my dad's kit car mags in the early 80s and visiting eagle, dutton and jago whilst on holiday with my dad on the South Coast. I almost bought a pilgrim rv back in the mid 90s but bought a dakar 4x4 instead. My aim is to make a modern usable kit car that will stand up to the harsh roads we have in Lincolnshire. Sierra parts are now getting more difficult and bmw seemed the obvious solution. I've been a mechanic, body repairer and engineer for 30 years. Just left a company fitting bmw engines to land rovers and making stand alone wiring looms that only need 4 wires to run engine and 6 speed auto box with a bit of ecu tweeking so shouldn't be cause for concern. Had a quick measure up today and I can see a few issues with subframes not quite fitting without some modification of the chassis but may end up making an entirely new chassis with larger box sections to take the power. Currently looking for a suitable e90 doner that hasn't been thrashed within an inch of its life then the fun can begin.

BMW E30 man myself keep it simple. other than the injection CU nothing complicated, modern BMWs give me nightmares and I have been a mechanic/auto electrician since 1965, Currently fully servicing and overhauling a Mercedes W168 A170CDi and repair of auto box, (K1 clutch, again), (engine, subframe etc. all out). headaches abound.

Peter do you have any details of the owner who got through iva. I've seen picture of a white rv with filled in front wings which is very similar to what jeep did with the wrangler tj in euro spec. I am trying to find what rule it breaks as many sevens etc pass with open wheels. As for mercedes w168 autos don't get me started. Very strange design.

Graham the green rv was one of the reasons for reviving my love of eagle jeeps. After seeing it in the flesh at newark as well as the other 3 on the eoc stand my partner agreed to another project.

Hi, Greg. With the screen, I had to cut the CJ hinges, to allow the bottoms to be moved out, wider. If you go to the "Eagle Owners" Facebook page, I have posted a photo, with a little more information.

Hi John, ive checked out the picture of the modified hinge. seems to work well. i hope to use the same hinges and mount the mirrors as pictured. i think i might recess the hinges flush into the pillar to gain a bit more wiggle room. Whats your plan with the roof? im hopeing to use a modified jeep hard top and doors similar to the yellow example.

Greg, I think I might try and use a modified CJ soft top on mine. A friend of mine makes canvas tops for classic military vehicles, so he can do the alterations for me. To be honest, I've not given it much thought, yet. I've got so much to do on the old thing, but my (and other peoples) motorcycle projects, keep getting in the way.

The IVA problem is there is too much space between bumper and wing so the dreaded ball test fails. The rest seems OK.
As far as which RV passed it will mean a search through the forum.

Hi Peter, Iv'e had a search through posts and found a picture of what i think is the vehicle. shows as registered in 2015 and currently sorned belonging to a member called Alan now showing as deleted? I presume you mean the sperical ball thats supposed to depict some ones knee? i wonder if a simple bar or guard with rounded edges added to the bumper equidistant between the wing and bumper would suffice to pass the test.

Graham i think the bumper ends have been swapped for us spec ones. all uk supplied jeeps have the gap filled in with fugly bumper ends that people swap out as they are aweful.
