Owning and driving a kit car is great but there are some vital things you need to be aware of to keep it great and in this month’s TKC magazine (page 104) the editor reviews a new product to help keep things great and has negotiated some special prices just for TKC readers.
The police have provided video clips www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/29075776 of the crash in which a biker on the A47 was killed and although the motorcycle was touching almost 100mph the driver of the car was found guilty of Causing Death by Careless Driving and this will most certainly affect his cost of insurance for some years. The issue of vehicle cameras is very much to the fore and probably worthy of discussion at the next club meeting.
Our new Digi-Cam is just the thing to keep life great and can be unclipped from the vehicle and used for leisure pictures as well.
Two industry statements are thought provoking.
From the Insurance Fraud Bureau “The Insurance Fraud Bureau estimates around 30,000 crash for cash incidents take place every year, costing insurers around £350 million and pushing up premiums for honest, innocent drivers by about £44 each”
From The AA. “Flash for Cash is a more recent phenomenon in which fraudster flash their headlights at an innocent driver, apparently to beckon them out of a junction only to speed up and induce a crash for which the innocent will be blamed – ‘I was driving along normally and you pulled out without looking’.
Although only of limited help when pulling out of a side street a forward facing camera can help especially after parking facing on coming traffic. Even if there are some parked cars in front. This is the perfect scenario for the perpetrator who gives a long flash and slows down so you can pull out and go across the road to rejoin on the correct side. They then speed up and crash into the front of your car. The fact that you were parked facing the oncoming traffic is in contravention of para 239 of the 2014 Highway Code meaning the baddy already has the law on their side so it doesn't take much to convince that you pulled out without due care. However your forward facing camera will have captured all that you saw including the flash of lights and them slowing down.
The AA had this to say about Dashboard Cameras
“More and more drivers are installing video cameras in their cars to protect against this type of fraud or even to protect themselves against possible accusations of careless driving offences such as tailgating or lane-hogging.
Cameras can give good protection against crash for cash scams and can be helpful in the event of an accident to help establish who was involved and who was to blame but should not be used for vigilante purposes. Video footage is useful to support an insurance claim and the development of this technology is welcomed and supported by insurers.”
There are plenty of cameras on the market so how to choose.
For the photographer who wants the best pictures and videos then the GoPro as used by the BBC is expensive at £400 plus but for great results for track days, etc. it’s the best.
For the gadget minded then something like the Mobius (about £70 from Amazon) or Drift is ideal. But it is tiny and doesn’t even have a built in view finder. You down load the manual from the internet, check out the forums for help, and down load an app to your Iphone to control them.
The Digi-Cam is provided as simple solution with everything you need in the box. The Digi-Cam includes a mirco SD card but be aware that most cameras do not include an SD card so you have to remember to buy one before you leave the shop or the internet otherwise you will have nothing on which to store the video or images. Also you need a class 10 card because a cheaper class 4 card won’t give the results as it’s not fast enough to load all the data captured by the video. Most cameras only come with one type of mounting so if you want to move it from a dashboard to bicycle you will have to go and buy another type of mounting. The Digi-Cam comes with a range of mounts for dashboard, windscreen, handlebars and helmet and a waterproof casing (down to 10 metres deep).
Lots to discuss and think about and the Digi-Cam normally £124 is £79 to TKC readers and when combined with a CHIPnTRAC security kit the total cost is £149 – two great bits of kit for less than half a GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition camera and more in the box.
