You don't need a "pump", use the good 'ol Corsa electric column unit, cheap and easy to fit but you will need ALL the bits, ECU etc. They go from £15 upwards. You will need a steering wheel boss to suit your wheel of course I have 225/60R15 on the front and rack & pinion steering from a Citroen c15 and I don't need it but I am thinking of it as a possible addition later as it would make things lighter in tight spaces, Wife might miss it from her Corsa Sport though

Great that's what I was hoping you would say as they are fairly cheap to buy ,that way I can fit a smaller steering wheel and I may chop it down so its a bit closer to the dash give me a bit more room to get in and out ,I took it to the petrol station yesterday I cannot believe the attention it got thank god it started lol

How about some details of the SS then Ben, I take it you are new to SS ownership, you will get used to the comments and "what is it" questions but it will always put a grin to your face like no other car can, with the exception of a Nova of course. getting in and out of a SS is an art in itself. left leg in, back pressed against the rear of the door opening,, right leg in whilst holding on to rear of door opening and top inside of seat, drop in seat. getting out is the reverse of getting in except you have to push yourself up the seat first. Most of us use a 30cm steering wheel but a few have a 25cm wheel, I had one and found 25cm/10" a bit too small, I now have a quick release which does away with the getting in and out problem and when locked in the boot, makes the car undrivable too. There are other, less expensive QD hubs, some with the centre correct for the vehicle, others just bolt onto the 6 bolt hub you may already have. [1] Peter

It has what could only be described as a gothic steering wheel which I will get round to replacing ,the rock hard bucket seats are already on the out list for the weekend .While fiddling with the lights I did notice the bosses where the main lifting bar goes through don't sit square if you tighten them up is this normal? Also none of the gauges seem to work no fuel gauge no temperature gauges and the speedo is optimistic so I will be sorting these out too, could anyone tell me if there is an air filter that fits under the bonnet at the moment it has what can only be described as chicken wire sandwiched between to flat discs with a piece of foam that doesn't meet in the middle thanks guys

Ive just been thinking (which is always dangerous) it looks like the doors can be removed in minutes so is it illegal to drive on the road with the doors off? also has anyone ever chopped the roof of an ss? I know I may be at risk of lynching with such comments lol

The roof is an integral part of the body and not only contains the integral roll bar but stiffens the flimsy VW floor pan and supports the expensive windscreen, so no, don't chop it off and yes we would be upset, there were only about 345 Ford SS ever made and we would like to keep as many of them as possible is some sort of original condition. Certainly remove the doors in the good weather, just undo the two hinge bolts either side and after removing the strut of course, you can lift them off, they are not to heavy, I did mine to fit the actuators and stainless fittings. Store then safely, you cannot get replacements. Where the headlight bar goes though the body varies, mine didn't come with any bushes, just in the GRP and I made poly plates up from a 4mm chopping board but some did have bearing or bushes in a housing with an arm that bolts to the boot wall, case of shimming and adjusting, you will find nothing is a slam dunk on these cars and everything is 'hand made'. Filter depends on the engine, 1.6 or 2.0l pinto etc, but a pancake filter is normal. Oh, and when getting in and out DO NOT hold the top corner of the screen, it WILL crack and that's 400 quid you do not want to spend at Pilkington's.

Hi thanks no don't panic I am not going to chop the roof off lol I like it as it is and I wouldn't want to loose those doors as I cant afford a deloreon, interesting to see the floor pan is made of plastic! bit frightening if the seats are bolted to it as mine seems to be

The fiber glass floors are actually stronger than the steel ones on the VW chassis and don't rust so don't worry about disappearing though to the road , I would swap any steel washers and nuts underneath, like the seat mountings, with stainless though as that option wasn't so common at the time the car was built, now days I fit as much stainless as possible. If you try and stay as near standard as possible it will make your life easier (and cheaper) than trying to make the proverbial silk purse, I know, my pigs ear is still a pigs ear after 19 years and well over eight grand, but it is a flash pigs ear . ukhozi.page.tl

I think its great I don't have to worry about rust ,I have sent off to join the club so will hopefully be a proper member ! I will hopefully post some pics of the car as it is and as I work on it and change things hopefully for the better ive already sent off for a whole load of stainless nuts and bolts especially after the escapade with rusted light lifter bolts ,before I forget could any one tell me the benefits of fitting a 5 speed gearbox over the 4 speed apart from fuel consumption and do all Eagles have the same size petrol tank thanks guys

Another member, that's great. Soon as Helen (who is a bit ickery dick at the moment) gets you your card and membership number you can wizz off and get some discounts. Always good to use Stainless where possible, save a lot of hassle in the future. Tanks, well the build manual on Ford and VW, SS and RV, say use to the donor's tank but there are variations ranging from custom made to mid-mount in the rear bulkhead like mine, easy on a SS but not so on a RV. I use a Triumph 2000 MkII but a Mercedes 190E is good these days but of course in a SS it means a false wall in front of the tank, if you need more info on this just ask and I'll pop some pictures on. The 5th gear is a cruise gear, bit like an overdrive and gives shorter shifts in the lower 4. Ratio is more a matter of differential ratio as well as tyre sizes, change one and it alters all.

Thanks for that have just completed another job! When I got it it had a horrible vibration and it was so noisy even with a cherry bomb, I stripped the exhaust system and found everything was just pushed together hence all the cafuffle .Everything is now properly riveted /screwed together (all stainless of course )now it sounds and drives so much better I also jizered the engine and got rid of years of crud, took hours but it is so much better and all the fume smells have gone I think an oil and filter change tomorrow is on the cards I have also located some Ram Air filter material to replace the crumbling excuse I have, onward and upward!

Google it or try SOSWORKSHOP27 on Ebay. Trucks and buses tend to be too heavy but marine ones are good.

Right I finally got a whole load of jobs done .I fitted /bodged on the half round steering wheel and immediately hated it so I started again . I butchered the old cortina boss and made and welded a new circular plate to it, I then purchased a new 330mm steering wheel and 25mm quick release boss the result is stunning it really looks and feels the part I will hopefully get some pics on here.
I flushed the heating system new water pump and thermostat I drilled and soldered a new boss onto the radiator so I could fit a new temp sender bloody thing still runs above 90 so I think a new radiator is in order the problem with thermo syphon is its not great even with the pump I even raised the radiator to get a better flow as the top hose was higher than the radiator which is never good
I then removed the side windows and fitted new stainless nuts and bolts very fiddly to get right especially as I couldn't open the window on the first attempt dohh .
Then I took it out for its first proper drive wow the noise the vibration and the hard suspension !
Does anyone know if there are much softer springs for the car if so where do I get them ?
I have spotted the car builder shop are doing a complete gauge kit so I think a new set is in order to remove my miss match of gauges .
