Reacting to a post on the Nova forum I wonder just how many Eagle cars ARE actually being worked on and how many have ended up garden ornaments or junked.' So many people over the last 6 years since this forum was resurrected have SAID they were going to do this that and the other to a RV or SS and simply dropped off the planet never to be heard of again. Over 150 names were chopped from the members list this year as people didn't post in 2 years or popped on and off without posting etc, (what happened to jonL and his raised SS with V6 engine project?) so what we have at the moment is active members but even so, just HOW active, I know the UK weather has been crap but even so, some sort of progress report would be cool. Some were none starters, "going to fit a V8 in the back", "going to re style the body", "going to strip and rebuild". etc. So who IS doing what and how many have ended up losing interest, patience or just killed the car? How many have been languishing in sheds and garages for years.

My RV is sitting the garage waiting for it's engine rebuild. Unfortunately our Land Rover Discovery (everyday motor) has just failed it's MOT on brakes and a tiny bit of welding, the RV has too wait AGAIN Both with time and money.

Always the case, when you have the time you don't have the money and when you have the money you don't have any time. I have sheds loads of time and bugger all money BUT I am making progress, slowly .

As the spartan respray is still to happen, think its time to turn my attention to the RV, hopefully Dave is coming over Saturday morning, then it's engine and box out, and 2.9 and box in, and wired up,
With any luck it might even be started up by Sunday evening, then an exhaust to build
Bring the weekend on!

Blimey, an engine swap in a day? Won't you need to make up new brackets or anything? Done now't to my own RV for a while (other than cleaning up the starter motor following some unsettling non-cranks...), but it is still being used on a daily basis, sans roof and doors - quite exciting in the current thick mist.. Slowly collecting bits and pieces for when I do get stuck in - I have a nice set of 17" alloys and I'm gathering together suitably chunky high-profile tyres. The big project will be the dash build. I haven't started on this, but I'm formulating ideas in me head. I do have the clock cluster I plan to use, tho' - from a Mk1 Granada; neat looking assembly, same speedo fitting, similar rev counter connections, and a couple of useful extra dials should I feel like connecting them - an oil pressure gauge and a voltmeter. (Not sure how the voltmeter works as the needle sits in the 'middle' position - how will a lower voltage make that fall?) Also looking at colours to ultimately respray the beast with. Fav colour at the mo' is 'Plum' as used on the Peugeot 106... (Not quite sure it'll suit it, but it is a deeply gorgeous colour...!)

If you can, build your new dash before you rip the old one out, then do a straight swap. the number of cars sitting there, including mine, where a dash is half re-built

Good advice Peter. It takes a lot to get me going on a project, but I think the 'dash' is in many ways the most satisfying one you can do. Every other part of a kit car is in essence a 'tweak', but the dash is a true ground-up construction.

Well so much for my big idea for the weekend! Jacquie put petrol in the diesel car, so had to go and tow her home, then set about emptying the tank! Now not a difficult job, if all the bits were to hand, trips to the lock up, to look, then emptying the tank, where do you put it all lol.
So the day drifted and drifted, so it's a job for next weekend now lol

Well, the sun was out today so I put a set of jump leads on the RV and, after around 30 seconds cranking up the fuel, it fired up in a cloud of blue smoke (valve stem seals) and settled into a nice idle. I've not touched it for months but the next job is to attack the rusted up bolts that hold the windscreen frame on. I need to re-position the screen to get the old hardtop on. Grinding the bolts off looks to be simple enough but it appears that there are two hefty lengths of angle iron, bonded into the sides of the screen frame and down into the body tub. I'll probably just try and slice through them with the mini grinder. I'm considering hinging the screen frame like a CJ7. I'll probably need to strengthen the frame but it will be secured at the top to an extension to the roll bar. The extension will unbolt from the roll bar for when the screen is folded down. Hopefully, CJ7 or Wrangler top door / screen hinges will do the job.

This week I will be removing the back axle from my RV. I think its a 3.8:1 ratio, the new one I've just rebuilt is a 4.4:1 which I hope will give me a bit more pulling power from the old 1.8 td sierra engine. Does anyone know how to rig up a rev counter off the front pulley or something.

What type of rev counter are you hoping to use, Terry?

Don't know yet, I need to rig up a sensor to count and then match it up preferably to a dial type of tacho. could be a magnetic proximity switch or photo sensor. But what tacho could I use. I suppose I could use a digital one. Just hoping someone may have done something similar. theres probably loads of production care sensors to use, ie crank position. or the ones used in aftermarket engine management systems.

Can't you find one which works off the W terminal of the alternator, like the Land Rover discovery diesel?

the only progress I've made lately was buying a second hand air compressor ... just a little one with a 25 litre tank ... figured that would be ok running of my genny but sadly no ... although my genny kicks out what must be close to 3kw when I turn the compressor on it stalls the generator immediately I know the compressor works ok so I must have just misjudged the startup power the compressor needs

That is rather small at 60mm and, only goes to 4000 rpm Bl00dy useless!

4,000 on a diesel is OK, most don't go that high and most gauges only go to 4,000, even my Mercedes 170CDi rarely gets over 4,000. BUT 301058889971 if you want a big one. there are lots out there under 60 quid and take off signal on older cars is from the alternator but if you have a ECU it will most likely have a tacho take off connection.

Well, at last I have got to work on the RV, brought car home at lunchtime, to start taking engine out.
Engine now ready for removal, then a bit of work on the chassis to get new box in.
Nice to be getting something done.

Nice job, Terry.
Why adjustable top links - what will that do?
What's the interesting V-twin motor? (Or is it a compressor?!)

Good question scooby, its just to get a better angle between the diff flange and the propshaft. With the axle in its lowest position ie if the car left the road the uj locks up, not good. So until I get some shorter shocks so it doesn't drop so low, I'l tweek it a bit with these. My car was a fairly early one and nothing realy fitted at the back so I made up my top links and lower links. I guess I just like tinkering LOL

Ah. I have to say, the prop angle on my own RV did make me wonder if it was ok - it approaches the diff quite steeply. Mind you, nothing untoward has happened yet, and I've given it some welly over pretty rough ground which must have seen both extremes of suspension travel being reached So, these adjustable links will 'rotate' the whole axle to bring the prop flange at the front pointing a wee bitty more up? Nice. Ok, one Q down and one to go - what's that small V-twin in the photo?!

yep we can see the photo but when I went into edit your post I saw three other links to Photobucket that are not showing and I tried to edit the links to make sure and even tried re-inserting them using the Photobucket link but nope.
I removed them and cut the 1st link from the second posting and pasted it under the photo in the first posting.
The first time I clicked on the link in the first posting I got all 380 plus of the others, hey, that's a lot of German Shepherds. I got one of those 'Veteran? badges too. In the second post the links work fine to the slideshows. all seems to have sorted now so we see all 18 of the car. Thanks.
