IN reply to the question I cut and pasted to Proboards.
Is this what you want?
You can limit the forum based categories and member groups. Visit the "Modify Category" link found in the admin panel, then select one of the categories from the drop-down menu and click the continue button. On the next page, at the bottom you'll find a restrictions area, here you should see "Guests", "Members", along with a list of all of your member groups and member ranks that are currently found on the forum. Just as an example, if you were to only check the box for the "Club Member" group on your forum and save the changes, only those members that are apart of the Club Member group will be able to view that category and all of the boards listed within that category. You can then modify the profile of new accounts that are eligible to view that area by placing them in the Club Member group. Once they're part of that group, they'll see that category and the boards listed in it where as they wouldn't have been able to before.
You may need to create additional categories and boards on your forum to do the tiered system that you're looking for, but restricting by member group in a category and would be the best way to go

I think that I understand that
Yes that is the type of board that we need.
We upgrade the paid up members so that they see all the categories and the guest's just get a taster and a couple of boards to see what we are about.
The shows and events board should be open so that guest's can see where we will be next so they can come along to a show.

What's with the big confusing waste of space at the top of the board I know what I have posted in and read I think it spoils the page

I selected "rectangle" header with latest posts at the top but it left the old "leader board" as well so I have reverted to "leader board" and the info is at the bottom again as it was. Problem is the board doesn't always do what it is supposed to do when items are selected from the menu, so it's taking a lot of 'suck and see' to get it right.

A good job there Peter I think thats what we want. It gives newcomers a taste of the forum, if they are serious enough they can pay up join the club and have full access.
