I was thinking about kit cars and their registration, and Chris' comments in a seperate thread have got me wondering a bit more! If a kit car, like an SS is built on a VW chassis, retaining suspension, transmission and engine, does it score enough points to be classified as a rebodied car, rather than a kit? Has anyone done this? Looking on eBay, there are always abandoned Beetle projects for sale with a V5 that could be rebodied with a VW based Eagle shell! I know this won't be an option for the Eagles that have their own chassis, but I wondered what others thought? Is it a possibility for anyone wanting to build an SS with one of the shells that sometimes become available.

I believe there is atleast one Nova (vw beetle based) that has done this.

I believe my RV (and others of course) are classed as rebodied Cortina's as its done on a points based system. Needs 8 points to keep its original registration, + a new chassis/body shell. Axles suspension and steering being the main donor components, you will find all details on the government website.

you can register a kit car on the donor registration as you score 8 or more and have the donor registration number, you can apply for a replacement v5 if lost, then change name to kit name, Eagle, Nova etc
Problems arise when you don`t know the donor`s reg number then you are in for a IVA test and a Q plate (RV will and has passed the IVA with the gap between bumper and mudguard filled in.). , I know the month my 1966 VW chassis was made but still had to have a 1995 Q.

Hi Peter, I acquired an RV with its donor's V5 but it never got registered, I hope to put your theory to the test at some point and see what happens, and if its still possible. I would rather try that and keep another Eagle on the road than just break it for spares.
