Hey there everyone,
I don't have my Eagle any more... but, like most of you, I took some pictures of it, while I had it.
Thought it might be fun for you to see some pictures of an Eagle SS in Iceland.
ALL THE PICTURES ARE IN THIS ALBUM: 1992 Eagle SS in Iceland Album @ Facebook.
(Quite handy to be able to store pictures free on Facebook.)
Here are some of the highlights:
Old picture, with Reykjavik almost too bleached to see, here:
(With the camera setting one could either see the CITY or the CAR... You can tell which I chose! ;-)
On the Grotta Peninsula (near Grotta Lighthouse) with the Gull-Wing Doors open.
(Pictures from 1992 below)
Trivia: The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in Iceland complained that the headlights were excessively "wobbly" as they were... So I made a deal with a guy who worked with fibreglass, to fix them up, permanently... so I got the stamp of approval, and was considered "roadworthy" again by the Icelandic DMV.
Living by the sea, the WIND and RAIN is relentless.
Like every car, this one has a long story.
Here are some of the highlights:
* Car was half built by Eagle Cars... I was told by them that the UK Tax people had started bothering them, and they had to choose if they were to be taxed on FULL cars, or just Kits... So they had to hand the project over to a private individual to finish. OF COURSE the price increased when they did this, and my father, who had ordered a "rag top" Eagle cancelled his order, and moved his deposit to my car. (It was more complicated than that, since he tried a car like he was supposed to get, and the doors "hung down" so you couldn't just SLAM / SWING the door shut, you had to LIFT it. He felt that was too "cheap and nasty" for him (he's a BMW, Benz kinda guy)... and that ALSO played part in his decision to move his deposit to my car.)
* Since I was just a student, in the UK at the time, and not finished paying for the car, and black was rare at the time, it was being used at shows by Eagle Cars, who transported it there. (Hence mileage was not affected.)
* Kinda shocked at not being told about that, I settled, and the car was shipped off the Germany (where there are regular ships to Iceland). There it got a weird German Export numberplate that I had on it for a few years (since I couldn't pay the tax and duties straight away) and people kinda identified that numberplate with the car. (I may still have this numberplate in the garage somewhere, but since it could be abused (used on non registered vehicles)), I hid it. The garage where I kept the car became a popular place for those who wanted to see it... and since it was black and so unique, Coca Cola Iceland asked to advertise on it, for $600 a month. I declined. I didn't want it to be known as the "Coke Car". Also, while I didn't want to sell, everyone (and their dog) seemed to want to buy it... The moment I wanted to sell... No one wanted it!?! (How WEIRD is that???)
* Ok, being more of a Biker than a sport car type, I eventually got myself a Harley Davidson Police Special (from a cop auction)... but, since the cops had more or less ridden that bike into the GROUND, the bike repairs were astronomical. Also, when people saw it was a "Harley" the added another 0 or two to the total of any repair bill. #$%& Sadly, eventually, the car had to be sold to pay for repairs on the bike. *sigh*
Yeah. I should have just kept the car and forgotten about the bike... but hindsight is 20/20.
At a time, I had BOTH:
(I can almost hear Van Halen's "Best of Both Worlds" here)
(yeah, and in case you are wondering / outraged, who CARES about the #$%& fence,
esp. when there are SS Eagles and Harleys to pay for! ... or should that be "can afford" rather than "CARES". Nevermind.)
Over the years I have tried to know WHERE the Eagle is... and it is now in a storage yard. The new owner was in touch and was planning to restore it... but that's the last I heard of it.
OF COURSE, in the back of my mind, and if I had the $$$$, I'd buy it back, for history's sake...
but we'll have to see what happens.
Yours,
Thor
