A good day in the 'shed' yesterday with parts actually being removed. The fuel pump and filter assembly was a total bust, The "heavy duty" glass filter was loose and leaking as the threads in the bar down the center that holds the two end caps on were duff and wouldn't tighten so basically it fell apart and the pump was so noisy as to be unbearable, (Facet red). The piece of AN465 tubing I had was a perfect fit for the removed section so nothing but that pipe there now over the axle, the new 'quite' pump, filter and regulator will sit under the tank behind the sub woofer. Also removed the top of the left hand DelLorto DRLA40 and found the pump jets blocked so removed and cleaned those and the ball valve in the bottom as well as turning the weights over the the anti bounce springs are at the top, still not happy with the spray nozzles and might well buy 4 new ones as they are an important part of the carb'. New HT leads fitted into the alloy tube and trimmed for a snug fit, hate cables flopping about. Had to remove the nuts from the plugs, which is good as I prefer the thread fit caps and these look good and solid plastic with the rubber skirts, as it should be, not soft rubber like the last ones. The engine fired up with a drop down the chokes so all good, just need to wait for the new stuff to arrive. The regulator needs to go between the pump and the carbs, so debating as to fit in-line (solid) with pump as a unit or mount the other side of the rear bulkhead so I can adjust it easily but will need a crap guard against dirt from rear tyre. I have just now ordered a new ignition igniter module for the Bosh 009 distributor as the (expensive) Pertronix one is dead and it was 28€ from China against 80€+..

Should have stayed in bed, Joined all fuel parts under the tank area only having to rethink it as I couldn't see the regulator unless I stood on mu head so I fitted it in the engine bay. Edit; as the 100% detailed fitting instructions came in 100% Chinese I did it wrong, well it id my first one of this type, I needed to 'T' the two carbs off of the bottom fitting so I have just blown 55€ on AN6 fittings to do it properly. so have to wait until I get more from Tourques on eBay, another week waiting...

New ignition module arrived today so away with the contacts and condenser this weekend.
Also the big job, changing to OEM gearbox mounts, as you know that means splitting the engine from the gearbox to do the rear ones and then the whole unit back to fit the front nose one. Luckily I have a gantry that fits over the engine so I can just move things without having to disconnect it all and drop it. Still a balls ache of a job.

Well,,, the day didn't go exactly as planned but then when does it? Rarely . Ended up fitting what I could in the way of the AN6 fuel fittings, so AN6 - 1/8" into filter, line from bulkhead to firewall, changing that from 'T' to an elbow and on to regulator in and then regulator to right carb but still left carb to do when pipe arrives also fitted the 1/8" to 1/8" adapter under regulator but 'T' on to that still coming, so half done, totally overlooked the female to female AN6 connector from pump 90 degree back to bulkhead so another wait for that to arrive. I did however change some engine mounts, not on the VW as intended but the BMW E30, the Fibi ones were crap so went back to OEM. Unlike the VW ones it only took half an hour to do. Last week it was a new head gasket on the Beamer only to find it was the well hidden block to manifold pipe that was split. Somehow managed to order two nose and one gearbox VW mounts so had to order another gearbox and send the nose back to LIME-BUG. Still, a little is better than nothing.

Now have both bell housing mounts and the nose mount so engine back from gearbox and when fitted whole lot back to fit front mount, bloody polyurethane mounts are rubbish long term. Also electronic igniter is here to fit in dizzy, less than 1/4 the price of Pertronix and actually looks better. Still short of a AN6 female to AN6 female straight to joint pump outlet to bulkhead fittings and 70cm of AN6 pipe, should have been here last Thursday, guess the posties donkey is lame again. Rest of the fuel system plumbing is done and looks good. Seems there are two ways to hook up the regulator, constant adjustable feed from outlet and pressure regulated line with return to tank. I have gone for the former, so T off of outlet to carbs and no return needed, we will see how it goes.

Been working on an old Nissan B6-60 engine horsebox that has not only been stood for two years but vandalised too.
A new starter and ignition switch immediately fired up with a HUGE bletch of smoke, well it has been two years standing, pumped up the tyres and it drives, yeah, now on to the electrics new wiper blades and a test.
Strange the way firms price things. First I identified the starter as a 18059n then went hunting, locally 285€,, on eBay for truck 185# but for a FO6 FORK LIFT 125€ inc shipping from Germany and 4,3KW not 3KW. bargain.
Anyway, paid for a bit more stuff on the SS, that's the main thing, just waiting for the AN-6 pipe to arrive any day and off to the shed again.

Good day in the shed today. All fuel system finished, remains to see if fitting pump directly to tank outlet isn't going VB to make it to noisy. If it does I'll just add some flexible pipes either end and rubber mount the pump assembly. Also got gantry ready to move engine back to fit new mounts. Then all back together and then move whole engine gearbox back to fit nose mount. I hope that way I can cause minimum disconnections etc. Pump / filter assembly ready to fit Fuel pipe into engine bay connection Regulator all fixed in Gantry ready to move engine back 3".

Only 15 years since 'rescuing' the car from the storage yard in Malaga, (who were supposed to be 'looking after it for 50€ a month'. getting there but having to work due to the pathetic UK pension is getting in the way At least my 1987 'classic' BMW passed it's test today. BUT,,,, also just received an Email from Holmes saying it is impossible to register the Q reg SS in Spain now due to regulations and laws.. I WILL get around it, should have done it 20 years ago when it was easy. BUT, EU law says; The technical requirements of the receiving Member State should not unnecessarily require that the motor vehicle be modified. The fact that the motor vehicle was already registered in another Member State means that the competent authorities of that Member State had already considered that the vehicle in question met the technical requirements applicable there. Thus, the competent national authorities can only refuse to approve a motor vehicle already approved in another Member State, regardless of whether it was already registered or not, if the motor vehicle in question poses a real risk to public health. Member State might be a problem soon,

Still slogging on. 2 meters of black alcantara fabric arrived but still sitting in the beamer as I haven't been able to get to the 'shed' in over a fortnight which is really frustrating.
Wife's '95 Corsa B Sport passed the ITV but on second (free) attempt as there was a SMALL hole in the exhaust pipe under the handbrake area, the mileometer was the same as last years and the year before and number plate light bulb was missing. So one 5W bulb, a little exhaust past and a speedo head strip to find the cog wasn't making contact with the spiral drive, so easy fixes, took an hour and it passed with an 'advisory' that the right headlight was too low.
Planned to head for the shed this morning and start upholstery and door panels but main client Whatsapped me that the chain on her quad had broken, so off to find a 520 link and repair it which brought the time to 14.15 and not enough time left in the afternoon to go to the shed, (45 minuets away and it's pissing down too). Again on Monday I have a 12:30 for an hour and a half and that is followed by a PGO 500 with poor spark. (no tickover, pops and bangs on over run. so Tuesday, maybe, but I need to borrow the HT coil from my Suzuki 400 to try and that's in the 'shed'.
Retired? never been so bloody busy!

As I can't be buried in it by law and my family can't finish it and I don't want it broken for parts you may well end up in my will to do just that. might mean a spell in Spain, transported back to UK or a lot of weekend trips on Ryan Air. Buy don't hold your breath.

Finally completed the dash once and for all in black alcantara suede cloth , yes it WILL stay this way. Just need to get the rest of the interior to match before starting on the outside, (overhead, A posts and door cards),so then, passengers floor, seat and both side windows in, shut the doors and forget the inside.

As expected I spent all afternoon shifting stuff and cleaning up, mostly junk that was last years "good idea" and off-cuts, three big bin bags full and a load of hardboard ruined by flooding. but all neat and tidy, again. Photos of last effort in interior trimming. Overhead re-trimmed in alcantara. still not 100% happy with headlining but that's an easy fix. Brake bias cable/knob ready.

Only work done since June is to install the gantry over the engine ready to pull it back from the gearbox so I can change the mountings, the red plastic ones that crumbled away. So fitting all new OEM rubber, last ones lasted 40 years so sticking with that type.
Still kicking door panel designs about but trying to keep it simple.

Although 'officially' I was at the shed to tune my BMW E30 that I had just fitted new water pump and cam belt to I did manage to start the left door card,
I can across an abandoned lounge chair that had red leather cushions so I am using that for the top half, a bit darker and heavier grain than the rest but still near enough and looks good and will wear better,
I have to make the 'bump' that blends the dash to the door and that part I am not looking forward to as I am crap at fiber glass but its only a small part that will fix to the hardboard panel and be covered in black alcantara cloth.
I would love to be like Brett and use them as a buck to make a mould to make a panel but I can be sure to screw that up. I guess if I covered the panel and 'bump' with brown packing tape and silicone I could just lay a couple of layers of GRP cloth and do it that way to make it a one piece as it doesn't need a nice finish. GRP materials in Spain are stupid expensive too.
Still not lifted the engine to change the mountings as I think I had better make it a day just for that job.
Problem these days is going back over things that have been sitting for many years and been damaged, faded or seized re-doing or freeing them up. The tyres for instance, only done a few thousand but needs all new as they are 30 years old.

Actually well under way with the door cards, I am really pleased that the current design is so very close to the one I did years ago so must have got something right , for once. Lower carpet and upper red leather areas done, dummy 'bump' made ready for remaking in 'something', haven't yet decided if to do in GP or foam. 15mm alloy strip yet to buy but the bit of scrap 10mm strip I do have bent in all the right ways so shouldn't too difficult, it's a 15 c 15 'T' section and most of the back will be cut away leaving just a few fixing points to go though the card, Eagle already fixed on red leather, looks really good. The stainless steel sills are almost finished too, getting a nice finish on them will be hard as they are made from scrap material but a lot of polishing will sort that out. Elastic net pockets are way too big so will have to remake them to custom fit the lower front area. I can see the edging is going to be a sod though. This what it will look like.

Getting there, this means driving 40 KM each way and as the economical Merc A170 has a buggered auto box that will cost at least 300é in parts, I have to use the BMW E30 that I have just got running sweet again after a new water pump and belt change. Checked the head whilst it was off and could not see any cracked but it still has a mystery coolant lose and of course uses twice the fuel as the Merc diesel but at least I will be able to get a bit more done in the shed although at the moment the weather is strictly stay at home, really bad at the moment in Spain.

Good news is the BMW E30 is up and running again, first trip highlighted a coolant lose which turned out to be the heater pipe at the back of the block, total sod to get to but a temp one at the moment and a new one on the way from the states. Now I have no excuses about going to the -shed- next week.

My engine is fine now, after changing the expensive 86€ Petronix igniter for a cheap 19€ one but now have to pull engine to replace all three plastic mounts for OEM rubber ones. I just hope the other Poly parts such as gear rod coupling, front suspension bushes and rear arm 'doughnuts' have nor crumbled in the same way.

FINALLY! A whole day in the shed, or at least a long afternoon. Got the shroud/alternator off which is quite easy and allowed disconnection of the oil cooler and breather simple and then the four bolt/nuts to split the engine away from the gearbox, also easy as I have the gantry and yes, the body does take the weight. The Polyurethane mounts, all three, completely disintegrated leaving just the bolts. All the old stuff has been removed and new OEM mounts ready to fit. The originals were still OK in 1995 after being there since 1966 so I think I made a bad decision back then, I only hope there is not a similar disintegration of the suspension bushes, I will have to check later, one job at a time, (for a change). I may be knocking out the remaining fixed M10 stud on the chassis and replacing with another bolt, (one already done in 1995 due to damaged threads so only one to do, don't understand why VW didn't do it that way in the first place). this will make it a lot easier to slip the new nose mounting in without having to remove the engine completely and disconnect the shift rod as I can get 5cm rearward movement with it all connected.

Hoping to move engine/gearbox back without disconnecting the shift rod proved over optimistic. The connecting joint hits the end of the tunnel so I had to disconnect it after all. That meant removing the gear cover ring and lifting the rear of the console so I could get to the front arm rest bolt so I could remove the arm rest, which meant removing the big amp above it so I could access the tunnel so I could get to the connection to undo the bolt, I then dropped the bloody rod into the bottom of the tunnel as I don't have a rod bush because it's a Skoda shifter and I will have to fish for it. Quite surprised at the lack of remedial work needed under the car, no rust or leaks, all seems solid and just needs a touch up of paint on chassis and red on gearbox and a little polish of the shiny bits. Still need to lift gear box up so it moves back and at that point I was getting tired and that means grouchy, so went home. Next trip to the shed was changing the worst part on a BMW E30 M20, the lower heater hose, took a hour and a lot of swearing but did it. Also had a go at welding the plastic header tank on the radiator that has a crack in it, seems to be ok so far, I did try super fix, super glue, hot glue, resin etc but the heat from the water buggered them all, so welding seems to be the way to go as a new rad' is not only expensive but like rocking horse poo for a 1987 M20, none A/C, auto. More next week but work looming again as one of my clients is moving and will need my handyman services as well as tarting up his '07 Range Rover Sport, the one that burnt out the Transfer case module and is now fixed.

Just a couple of tweaks to the Eagle this month, but nothing major, just making sure the work already done isn't crapped out by from standing.
Other work getting in the way as usual. Range Rover client has me painting his apartment now and it's a big one, as well as fitting some parts to his Range Rover that had bust or fell off, one of which was the rear seat release handle which is NLA, so had to pay eBay price for it.
BMW E30 is finally sorted and the kick down adjustments seem to work, goes like a rocket so need to restrain myself and remember the car is 33 years old but at least overtaking is no longer a problem.

Having just got the BMW E30 running good some f**king idiot pulled out from a side turning whilst I was barreling along at 75Kph and after a screech of tyres and a cloud of smoke I smacked her week old Hyundai Kona in the rear.
Guadia Civil came and gave her a right bollocking for launching from a stop sign without looking (I even had my headlights on) and the BMW went off to the repair shop with front right corner smashed, headlight, bumper, bonnet, wing etc. Problem is, book price is about 10% of market value, I can't buy a similar car for under 4,000€. Whilst EU law says I ,"should not be disadvantaged or out of pocket", as it was clearly her fault but in Spain just trying to get a courtesy car is impossible , I expect a battle to get the car repaired to it's pre-accident condition, 1987 E30 320i undertray anyone?
I tried to get a agreed value of 4,500€ on renewal but companies here are decades behind other EU countries or the premiums are silly money for TPFT, even on 'classic or historic cars'.
Over 30 years old? Still cost 600€+ to get it on H plates and the much lorded reduction in insurance (from special companies only, cost more than TPFT from Direct Line! It seems companies here do not do historic discounts or agreed value)
Rant over!

Latest blog on my cars. SS, managed to get the front mounting in and everything bolted up again, just need to rebuild interior and engine again.. Needed to strip half the interior to get to the linkage and using a bottle jack, jack it backwards and then jack it forward again but job done and all new OEM mounts. Whilst underneath I saw quite a few areas that need touching up so back under with the red enamel and black chassis paints next trip. Door panels still in the melting post but sticking to the original design from years ago, just need to get the balance of red leather, black alcantara and grey carpet right. Brakes still need bleeding, again, as I saw a leak on front right caliper that needs attention. As for my other cars; where to start! The 2001 Mercedes A170 has an automatic gearbox fault, again, most likely the 1st gear clutch basket split, again. I cleared the fault codes which said "lack of pressure to #1/4 valves etc using my laptop and Delphi 1915 software with a VCI +BT dongle and put 1 liter of multi TQF in and I got reverse strong again but just about moves in 1st, as soon as I tried to drive it went into 2nd, 'limp home mode' again so that's that until I have at least 1,000€ to get it fixed and is it worth that for a 2001 car? It is however a very versatile vehicle and we use it a lot for work and boot sales etc. The BMW IS worth a lot more, between 4K and 10K according to market prices and the insurance company have accepted the fact I will NOT ACCEPT it being a write off or being recorded as such as it would kill it's classic car status and value, I am trying to get it re-registered as a classic car on a H plate, as it's over 30 years old but it is at least 600€ to do, unlike the UK which is the price of a trip to the post office.. Battle on, watch this space.
