Hi all I’m just introducing my self as I’m new to the forum and would like to contribute more. from Birmingham West Midlands. I’ve always been interested in motorbikes and cars right from my teens when I bought my first moped a Honda SS50 which I rebuilt the engine in order for it to go better and faster and have been hooked ever since. My Kit car Q364VOF VW beetle floor pan purchased 1982 Eagle SS Body (VW beetle based) Chassis no E101 Purchased 1984 and car registered 1991 After seeing pictures in Alternative Car magazine of cars like the GTM (I think) with a mini engine in mid position I thought could this be done with say a Nova and say a Ford mk3 engine gearbox or similar Ten years later I had built and registered a Lancia Beta 2.0 ltr transverse mid engined Eagle SS which I am very proud of. Please note if I had known from the start how difficult it would be I would not even started! Here some scanned photos of my build. VW engine and transmission cut off chassis after centre line was marked on remaining floorpan Not many photos after this as finishing it became priority as it was going on for too long. New front suspension (Fiat Argenta based) made after getting car on the road. It bolts on the front and after checking alignment is welded to bulkhead and chassis I do not have any up to date digital photos, as was explained in Stoneleigh 2019 show thread, the car was taken of the road in 1997 and has only just been put back on the road. It made me very sad indeed seeing my car slowly deteriorating while it was off the road, you used to be able eat your dinner off the engine, but sometimes that’s the way it is. That said she’s okay and still goes well! Hope you found it of interest any questions I would be happy to answer. Mark

Hi Mark,
Welcome back!
It was great to see that your SS has 'risen from the dead' so to speak, should name it 'Lazarus' maybe. There are several SS's out there with a similar story of family and career getting in the way over the past 20 years and I hope more will come to light, (CHAZ!)
I was at the Stoneliegh 1996 show too in my black SS Ukhozi and was very impressed by your car. (I think that was the show I did some doughnuts and broke the gearbox, (or was it Ascot?).
I hope that now you have more time the SS will be loved a bit more and kept in great condition.

I can't believe it's taken me this long to track down your car. I saw your car on the Eagle stand at Stoneleigh but that was all, no other cars or owners to talk to by the time I spotted it. Hung arround a while but I had a long journy home so had to leave without solving the mystery. I would have loved a chat about the build... God knows, I've looked everywhere to find someone who has one on the road.
My build is more along the lines of a standard build but as I have no idea what that should be it could be stranger than I think!? The body was cream-crackered, hence the name Humpty. I've gone with standard Beetle floorpan and 1761 engine, keeping my mods to the shell, which needed some saving and subtle mods along the way. I started all this 2 years ago and still have a long way to go before I see any light at the end of this particular tunnel.
At least your photos have cleared up the clamshell detail I saw at the kit car show but I had no idea you had gone so far from the standard VW aircooled lump beneath it.
Any tips on how the hell I get photos on a post to say much more than a pile of scribble could. (Not keen on another pay monthly account to achieve it though).
Hope to see you there again, or at another meet.
Nice work,
Gavin

Thanks Gavin I missed you at the show. Peter has done a very good post on the forum on how to include images using VGY.me on the forum its in Specific subjects then Photo transfers. here's the link eaglecarclub.proboards.com/thread/2207/photo-transfres. I used this together with VGY.me , its easy after you've done it once. Just create an account it is free and you don't get hassled with email spam or anything. I would love to see your car sometime whatever state its in and have a chat.

Hi Mark,
Joined up with VGY and tried my first photo... boy was it a big one! I must have been photographically constipated ( about that, it must have bypassed my good taste filter).
I'm adding a personal email to my details in case anyone wants to contact me directly, an invitation extended to your good self. It's an easier way to send detailed info and photos, also to arrange a meet, where possible.
As for me, I'm still fixing, filling and sanding the shell. Can't tell you how p****d off I am with Rosso red dust! Just finishing off the boot lid, with nessessary repairs and mods, then it's on to the doors. Goody!
On a totally disconnected note, I solved my lack of wiper problem with a marine wiper motor unit and matching pantograph. There's somehting oddly attractive and dated at the same time about the pantograph system.
Also windscreens are proving difficult to order thanks to Pilkingtons not knowing much about what they produce. I'll add something to the 'windscreen' thread when I have some positive news.
Still can't get over the rear camshell and the other work you've done to your car. Great job. Mine still looks like Frankenstein's monster. It desparateluy needs a coat of paint to get all the additions to match.
All the best, Gavin

So I was looking forward to seeing some of you guys again at Stoneleigh this year, last year being the first one attended for over 22 years. For obvious reasons, sadly its most likely not going to happen.
However some of you may have wondered how I’ve got on my Eagle with it being off the road for the same amount of years, so I thought I would update you all.
Well I have really enjoyed it, and it’s great to be back.
The Eagle needed some work of course understandable for time period
The brakes have had a total overhaul, new pistons and seals all round ,new pads as they fell apart with corrosion and a new master cylinder to be on the safe side.
The brakes are good but compared to modern cars with there ABS and large servos not as sharp. Same with the steering I think I’ve got so used to power steering it feels heavier at low speed than I remember, but it may be I’ve just gone feek and weeble in my old age.
Fuel level sender was playing up, a big job as I have to dismantle a lot of the car to get to it, this fault turned out to be corrosion on the pivoting arm causing a bad earth.
I haven’t done lots of miles as my car as its purely for pleasure, 652 to be precise, but on one day trip out to Westonbirt arboretum the gearbox diff seal sprang a slight leek and started spraying oil over the exhaust. All fixed now without taking the engine out which was a relief.
I do have a slight leak from the sump gasket but I’m hoping that will not get any worse as I think it’s an engine out job.
Lastly lots of poor electrical connections but easily fixed, so all in all really pleased.

Great only such minor problems and easy fixes. Keeping an Eagle roadworthy is not a big job but needs to be kept on top of.

Ram is very kindly hosting some photos of my car at Stoneleigh 21 and I noticed there was none of its new posterior. So here it is with its new lights, reprofiled bumper and no longer a visible lock on the boot. Hope you like it.
