Tim was kind enough to send me the history of the car he has for sale so I thought I would make a new thread for him.
Thanks for posting the eagle on your forum. To be honest I was a little unsure about contacting the club / Forum following a bad experiance I had on a similar site. Anyway putting all that aside I've attached some photo's. 14f6_1.jpeg is a photo from the original advert. The others are of the car sat on the drive at home. Its had a few more parts taken off it since then and this time of year its current not so shiny.
Some History.
The car was probably taken off the road for reasons unknown in May 2001 according to the tax disc. I bought the car off Ebay in April 2007 from a guy in Blackpool who was selling off a small collection of kit cars. The car was advertised as complete and an easy project for the Summer. It was bought unseen and delivery arranged using one of the advertised firms on ebay to deliver the car to our address in Wellingborough, and this is where the tale of woe begins..
The transporting company winched the car backwards onto their VW Transporter not realising the bonnet hinge the opposite way to 99% of cars on the road. They also didn't check the load was secured. Promptly 15 miles into the journey the bonnet was torn from the car on the M55 just outside Manchester causing a small pile up!!
With the car on the drive we the started to assess the project. It soon became clear this was never going to be a quick project, there were all sorts of things wrong.to list but a few;
- The car sat funny. The rear end was inexplainably jacked up (at least 6" from top of tyre to wheel arch.)
- The exhaust was square
- The engine turned but wouldn't fire. Closer inspection revealed the gearbox had also been changed to a type 9, but bodged in the process.
- The headlights were shot the connecting tube was rusted solid and the mountings on the inner wing smashed and appeared to have been mastiked back together.
- The wiring was shot and dangerous. for some crazy reason whoever built the car sent their homemade loom down the offside of the car by the drivers seat, poked it out a hole in the rear of the passenger compartment and looped it up to poke back though the rear wall to the fuse box above the transmission tunnel. ( In the photo of the fusebox attached thats the petrol tank sat 2-3" behind the fusebox.) Surely that wasn't safe.
The project was started by stripping back the car to a sound basis.By the time this was done I was left with the chassis, Ford running gear and the body. We then started collecting parts for restoring the car.
Over the years I have collected the following:
A brand new bonnet supplied by Tim Naylor at TeacSportcars.
1.6 Pinto LSD engine and type 9 gearbox. (this came from a complete Sierra I bought off a scrapyard and salvaged anything useful.)
Complete sierra wiring loom, fully labeled.
Most of the dashboard plastics, controls, steering column, binnacle, pedals central locking, electric mirrors, handles, latches, locks, master cylinder etc...
New pair of Recaro styled seats
MGF backbox ( I thought a twin exhaust would look good if I put the spare wheel behind the drivers seat and lifted the boot floor slightly.
Fiesta fuel tank (it was cheap and brand new.)
New Halogen 7" lights with bowls and bezel.
Genuine pair of Porsche 928 plastic cowls.
A complete MR2 flip up light system, Pop-ups, front loom with fuse box, relays and switches. I started stripping the loom to the bare minimum ready to splice on to the sierra loom, but hadn't got as far fabrication.
BMW Mini indicator/sidelights. I thought round lights would look better with the 7" round headlight.
BMW E46 side repeaters
Fiat Coupe round rear lights to folloew my circular light theme through.
A large roll of Schoeff fabric (black with a blue fleck.) that could be used on interior trim panels (Surplus from work, I'm a Design Engineer for a company that makes suspension seats for construction vehicles.)
I was still troubled by the ride height as well as the mess that appears to be the back end. Even with the ride height fixed that whole axle assembly floating around seems to take up alot of what was once a large engine bay for a VW engine. I toyed with the idea of Air suspension, but then convinced myself the best way forward was a Sierra rear end. By having a fixed diff with drive shafts I hoped to reduce the transmission tunnel size and make it easier to route exhausts, fuel tanks etc.. in the rear
Unfortunately I didn't think to keep the rear end off the sierra I scrapped so I ended up buying the bits for the conversion off Ebay. I have
7" differential
bolt on drive shafts
rear hubs with disc brakes
the lower arms
mounting hoop
I also have a set of 4 stud discs and calipers from a Ford Scorpio.
In addition there is also alot the original parts I stripped off but didn't have the heart to throw away. Lights, clocks, exhaust, radiator etc..
I have come unstuck in that for me to do the project I believe the car needs some major structural updates and having no welding experiance its perhaps more than I should take on. I did have someone lined up who could do the work but its the saving up and cost of paying someone else that stops the project. While I could raise the money I can't afford to spend it when I need to put my wife through driving lessons and find her a practical first car.
Hence after that long winded bedtime story I come to the original point of as much as I love the car I really should sell it. I could do with some guidance on asking prices. I know what the project has cost me to date, and obviously I want to make as much money as possible. Any ideas what might be sensible? I can ask what I like, but people are only going to pay what they think its worth. So I'm open to sensible offers.
Hope its been a worthwhile read
Best Regards
