If anyone is interested, I'm probably going to break the two SS's I have and the screens will be available. I'm to have to do this but despite having two ebay auctions (one ruined by a total timewaster) and over 150 watchers, I've had not one single bid on them. I need rid of the cars as we're moving house & I just don't have space to keep them. £200.00 per screen plus carriage.

How many have actually ordered a screen so far and has anyone else fitted one? SSs still popping up on Ebay without screens so there must a demand for them.

Just catching up, been away for a while, my screen fitted, think it came in around the £320 pounds Had to collect it though from down south, (Well a friend brought it up on his travels) Worth the bottle of whiskey reward I gave him.

Well, two and a bit years on and how many bought a screen now they have the tooling? Just reading on the Stirling site of a Cimbria that has cracked his screen getting it out to paint the car, (why?) says its $1,470 to replace. What was the end result in fitting the first screen that was correct, is it still a good fit? What was the final part number, price and can one order a one-off still? This is a composite picture of all the latest info I have, how close is it?

One of the points in the ebay of my car article was that there was a new screen worth £300. I did wonder where the figure came from That said - doesnt seem to be too good a fit.. will likely be removing and reseating it.. VERY CAREFULLY !

When I took the screen out my SS before removing the body I was that worried it took me pretty much a full working day to take the screen out :-) broke lots of blades slowly peeling bits of silicon out but got there in the end

I think the replacement screen was a good fit, it looked wrong as it was laid on an old one if the photo is anything to go on. It would be interesting to know after all the effort MellOrman put in how many owners actually bought one. In fact it would be nice to know how mellOrman is getting on with his SS two years on. Mine will have to be re-seated as I can actually move it in the body, it's only held in by the stuff on the edge and about 10% of the surface.

I think there is a difference between one 'bonded' in as in production cars and 'glued' in using Sikoflex or mastic as on kit cars. I wouldn't even try to get the screen out of a production car.

if in doubt. although you would have to pay. you could get a proper windscreen company to remove it. sure Ed China did that for one of the cars in Wheeler Dealers ..

Ed China did on a few cars, mainly due to having to weld in a patch to get rid of rust. 'cause he's not a proper mechanic at all, doesn't even hold or use tools right and when he swapped out the self levelling rear end on a Cosworth instead of just replacing the spheres I could have killed him! As a professional for over 40 years, watching him make me cringe.

My screens in and fits OK no worries. Much better than nothing, would imagine it gets a bit windy in the cockpit without one:-)

when I took the screen out my SS it looked like it was basically held in by mastic, is that how you refitted it ?

Mine looked to be originally stuck in with black mastic which had gone all hard, the new screen was fitted by some auto windscreen type of company, they were on site fitting a new screen in a VW camper so the garage got them to re do mine as well, not sure what they use but it looks a lot neater than my attempts

Hi is it possible to have a perspex sheet made up? using windscreen as a template (as mine is cracked) its cost affective and strong

Unfortunately it has to be laminated glass, apart from which it would last about a year if you're lucky and it didn't get totally useless by scratching. You can use perspex in the sides an rear though but the side must open to allow mirror adjustment if knocked, (or left off for the test if you need a SVA). New ones are available from Pilkington's at about a third of what a Nova one cost, and as mellOrman can attest, they do fit. TIP # 567 Most SS screens are cracked because of people hauling themselves in and out by holding onto the top corner, fit folding handles, (normally fitted above car doors) to the roof between the hinges to avoid this.

Hi is it possible to have a perspex sheet made up? using windscreen as a template (as mine is cracked) its cost affective and strong Anything is possible. You can fit smaller wheels and tyres to save money, etc, etc, etc. Up to you if you want to try a perspex windscreen, but buy a new or secondhand one. Pilkingtons may do them, and they will be at Stoneleigh kit car show, so I will ask them if they still do them. Expect a £ 400 price tag. Advice, get a glass windscreen. You got the car for nothing. But as above, windcreens have to now be laminated ( Elf a safety )

Just had a quote from CCs for 4m of windscreen trim and etching paint to make a black obscuring band and 58 quid (to me in Spain) inc VAT. Trim from Seals is 4 quid plus VAT a meter, paint no more tha 8 a Litre and say 15 for P&P, so a bit pricey, BUT, all in one package and with technical back up..

The contact is called Peter Swann.
Email Address is Peter.Swann@nsg.com
Price WAS around the £320 pounds at the time Mellorman got his.
Pilkington number # A1881 CL (clear)
The screens are just bonded in with mastic but I would advise spending a little more and getting a black obscuring band around it as well on the order. You can DIY as in the post four back.

Just to resurrect this thread as it contains a load of information relative to the SS windscreen.
How many people actually bought a new windscreen? What did it cost? Did it fit well? Did you have it professionally installed? Anyone still have the latest info, numbers etc?
