Simple question. Has anyone tried slipping a Duratec (or Zetec) into a Ford based SS? If so, was it easy/difficult and is there any advice you can offer?

I haven't heard of this yet Mike, but lots have been fitted into 7 style cars and escorts so there is plenty of info out there. If you go ahead keep us informed please. Cheers Terry

Well, that was the thinking. I've got a Locost and I have a warmed over 1600 kent in it. I was thinking of swapping it for a duratec running on bike carbs but then I thought one might fit nicely in the Eagle. I'm not sure how high it is but I'm trying to avoid the large thingy & balls shaped bump that covers the pinto & carb and get a smoother bonnet line.

Probably not, but I'm not keen on the bulge on a bulge that the Pinto bonnet comes with. It all looks a bit untidy to my eye. I suppose the best choice to keep a low bonnet line might be a v6 but as the car is intended for my son, I need to keep the capacity low hence I was thinking 1400 or 1600 Duratec or Zetec. I know the Zetec comes in at 600mm from bottom of sump to top of cam cover. I'll just have to get the measuring tape out & see how it fits. As has been pointed out, either engine is a fairly common mod in old skool Fords so parts should be reasonably easy to get hold of.
Anyone got any other small capacity engine suggestions?

Rover engines have been popular in 7's also. and parts are out there again for ford conversion.

Yes, I was reading an article in the current 'Classics' magazine about a MG Midget with a K series in it. As it happened, the owner was going back to an A Series but with a blower. However, the K series conversion did sound interesting. Having said that, I'm not a big lover of anything BL/Rover. Anything that I've owned from them has usually been a disaster.

Why not go boxer? Chevy Corvete, Subaru and Alpha engines can give high output per cc and very flat.

Good idea Peter, can any of these be mated to a rear wheel drive gearbox ie type 9 ?

They all can, even a VW lump, with the correct adaptor. Or you could go FWD, you would be the first as far as I know to have a FWD SS, (there is a 4WD SS based on a Sierra 4x4). Fixing the sub frame complete with engine and transmission to the Cortina chassis and providing tower mountings at the top. The Alpha 1750 was a RWD, I'm not sure if the boxer engine would fit though. There is a 1.7 16v for a quid on Ebay at the moment (320377022129) Resrve not met but should go for under £200

A boxer had crossed my mind but I guessed that they might be too wide for the chassis, perhaps I'm wrong!
A Scooby or Alfa would be the obvious choice and I have certainly heard of them being mated to Ford running gear. Alfa is probably the better choice on cost grounds but the Scooby probably has a larger user base (for cribbing ideas & asking questions).
I'll have to do a little more research on engine dimensions to see how they fit. Wonder if anyone has put one into a Cortina or Escort?

I'm sure the projects still out there Peter I've always thought that if the impossible happened and I won the lottery, I would like a large, fully equipped premises with plenty of room for a few cars to play with. then I woke up and realised the council lockup will have to do Brett

Tuned 2L zetec with bike carbs going in mine However , getting rid of the bonnet bulges means dropping the engine about 3" . So i'm making my own crossmember with proper double wishbone suspension, home made billet uprights/spindles coilovers etc. Also need to move the steering rack forwards in front of the engine,so lots of fun designing the linkages to get the steering geometry right.

That is going to YOWLLLL, would love to hear that on full chat in a tunnel. What you doing after tea? That's quite an ambitious list, how does the transmission sit after dropping the lump 3" gear shift will drop too, making a short lever, prop-shaft in line still

The standard cortina setup has the engine angled down slightly at the rear,so can lower the engine and box a few inches to sit level. Will have to make a linkage to move the gear shift back around 6" as it was always to far forwards.Apparently this is a common mod on Westfields etc, so should be quite easy. Propshaft will have to run at an angle to one side to mate up with the jag axle but shouldn't be an issue, apart from running through the passenger seat belt mounting .So will have to modify the roll cage to fit 3 point harness?. Progress is a bit slow at the moment as i have to finish making the front suspension components before i can start on the chassis. I will be posting all the details once the build gets under way.

Serious chunk of alloy there, you must have some interesting skills and machinery to hand. Can't wait to see the rest. peter

Just remember the ford Eagle has no rear wheel grip as it only has the weight of a tea bag over the rear wheels so more power will be harder to get down, great for rubbery number elevens though

And darn good at doughnuts too, so there you have it, 0 and 1s, a binary Eagle. Jason built a 3.5 V8 SS and it is so powerful it is now residing at Prescott for racing only, no good for the road.
I would love to see someone drop the complete 4x4 drive from a Subaru though. Would need a complete new mountings and tunnel but doable and it could have a flat bonnet too.

Seems there are a LOT of threads including this one that stopped a year ago or more. Wonder what happened?

Might be a good idea to remove threads that haven't been updated for a while it does get confusing (especially to me )

Might be a good idea to remove threads that haven't been updated for a while it does get confusing (especially to me ) Problems are; 1, They still contain useful information, tips and words of wisdom, or how NOT to do it. 2. It would take a long time to do and what would be deleted would not be down to the editor but the date last posted and that would be too abutary and doing one by one would take for ever.
